Why would the Y-Wings/Xwings angle their deflectors double front during the trench run if those large turbolaser batteries would just rip through them? Unfortunately we never see one of the big guns hit the starfighters.. or can they survive a few shots from it?

Maybe they felt angling them that way, would possibly bounce off the shots??

Technically, they didn’t angle them (the exact quote was “switch your deflectors on, double front"). However, WEG doesn’t really have a mechanism to represent doubling the front shield in a meaningful way. Y-Wings, for example, have 1D+2 in Shields (or 5 pips), so they could conceivably split their Shield Dice four ways: +1 to Left, Right and Rear, then +2 to Front. It’s technically “double front”, but only boosts the Y’s combined soak to 5D.

I rule Double Front as two arcs rotated 45 degrees to cover the forward 180 degrees. My players also use "Double Zenith" when on the ground to form a two-arc dome over the ship. As long as one arc is 25% of an ellipsoid, I don't care about the angle it is projected.

Also when calculating the Shield Die Score, I round up pips as I rule the closer to a sphere the shields are, the less energy it uses to form the shield's shape.

I thought the y-wings combined value was 5d+2 (4d hull +1d+2 shield)? May be mistaken as i am on my phone right now.. So can't look the pdf up.

Y-Wing Hull is 4D+1. Also, IIRC, you don’t combine pips into D under the circumstances, so technically the Y-Wing’s soak would be 4D+3, not 5D.

If the hull is 4d+1 (above the 4d i thought), and shields are 1d+2, wouldn't that combine to 5d+3?

Yes, if you put the full 1D+2 in the Front Arc. I was speculating putting +1 in each arc, then an additional +1 in the front for +2, thus “double front”. That doesn’t mean I like it, though, and a shields house rule would likely produce better results.
