Ok, say we were to play a campaign centered on, say CorSec. What skill(s) would a hostage crisis negotiator have? What about a suicide prevention negotiator??

Indeed, it all depends on the approach.

If you try to convince him that's not the best course of action: persuasion.
If you try to assure him he won't be arrested and they just want the hostages back and he can go free: con.
If you try to negotiate giving him a speeder in exchange for all the hostages: bargain.
If you try to make him see he doesn't stand a chance and should better give himself up: intimidation.
And if you go for "aggresive negotiations": lightsaber.
I don't think Command would work, as I see that only being used to affect people already under your command, not to dominate others...

Well, anyway, you'd better have a high Perception.

Or dodge in case your Perception isn't up to snuff. Laughing

If they want to explain why they are innocent it's CON.
If they want to make a deal (if you release us I can give you data regarding...) it's BARGAIN.
If they want to order to be released (assuming corsec people think they are imperial special agent for exemple) it's COMMAND.
Persuasion is used to interrogate (persuade someone to speak...).

Interrogation is a specialization of Intimidation.

It all depends on the method of interrogation. If it's coercion, it's persuade, if it's threatening or strong arm, it's interrogation, if you're offering up a deal "we can reduce your jail time if you answer these questions" it might come under bargain or persuade..

Basically:
Convincing someone of something in their best interest, or simply isn't against their interest: Persuade
Convincing someone of something that isn't in their best interest and may be harmful: Con
Convincing through force or threat: Intimidate
Dealing to get information: Bargain (generally)

I don't think a Con is "convincing someone of something that isn't in their best interest and may be harmful", that would be either persuasion or intimidation, depending on how you went about it. Con would be lying to the person or twisting the truth in order to convince him to do what you want. Like saying his buddies betrayed him (when they didn't) and he'd better tell on them, or making false promises...

Yeah, I wouldn't consider a lie to be in one's best interests Smile
That's basically what I meant, but I see its pretty open to interpretation and not as clear as I'd hoped.

One's "best interests" is a very subjective thing. What you might consider your best interests might in fact not be, considering the big picture.

I think the difference among these skills is not what you try to achieve with them, but how you go about it, what tools you use.

- If you use falsehood, lies, half-trues, made-up stories: Con.
- If you use logical arguments, appeal to reason and genereally try to convince someone with arguments you believe to be true: Persuasion.
- If you use bullying, show of force, mind games, threats or subtler things of that type: Intimidation.
