Gry is quite correct.

Not only were there journals in OB1's home, there was also a small furnace and the materials (and of course, instructions) for creating gems for use in a lightsaber. The journals were quite complete, so Luke had no problems learning how to properly build a lightsaber, even when natural crystals (which are ALWAYS preferable to synthetic) are not available.

Yup. "Didn't the Quixotic have only 1D in Sense, or maybe just Force Sensitive with no powers in later editions? Maybe I'm recalling something else...
*quietly curses pesky job for separation from WEG books*"

Is correct. The QJ did have 1d sense.

As a side question. For those who don't use templates but just have them do the 18d assignment as they like. How do you determin if a person who decides to take force skills/powers starts with a lightsaber or not??

To saber or not to saber is mostly determined by era and background. We usually play Rebellion era so lightsabers are rare, unless we're running an Imperial campaign and have a Dark Jedi. Lightsabers (and Force users) are more common in eras before and after the Empire. Here's a quick table for a 1D6 dieroll:

Era_________________Jedi________________Dark Jedi / Sith

Republic_____________5 in 6 (83%)_________5 in 6 (83%)
Empire______________1 in 6 (17%)_________4 in 6 (67%)
New Republic_________4 in 6 (67%)_________5 in 6 (83%)
NJO________________6 in 6 (100%)________6 in 6 (100%)

I made lightsabers a certainty in the NJO period since Force users, and Jedi in particular, were hunted relentlessly and constantly fighting for their lives. Combat figured heavily into their early training just so they could survive.

I'm pretty sure you find out that that Luke was working from the journals of Obi-Wan in the novelization of RotJ.

And there's more detail on it in Shadows of the Empire.

yes, Shadows of the Empire actually shows him building his lightsaber on Ben's old house. Manufacturing the synthesized crystal and turning the saber for the first time (always a dangerous affair, with artificial crystals...)

Apologies for that illegible chart. Fixed it with some handy lines.

Anyway, the ROJ Radio Drama also briefly covers Luke's trials and tribulations with his first saber construction. Seems he had a few goes at it before he 'let go and used the Force'. Amazing what happens when he follows Ben's advice. Smile

I don't know how well the Sourcebook describes these events. You have to read the actual book.

As i said: the more i read the more it seems an infinite task... Wink

Jokes apart: i have some problems understanding how a beginning "Force user" (i dare not say Jedi) is created: does the player have to choose his Force abilities spending some of his 7D skill dice (on the 1D = 3x1D force skill dice basis)? In alternative: is he granted a pack of starting Force skills for free (i suspect this is not the case)?

I must say that the rulebook is somewhat skippy in dealing with character creation (at least they could have described the process in a more straight manner, imho).

In order to create a Force user from scratch the initial 1D in any of the three Force skills comes from the character's attribute dice pool. They have 18D to spend on attributes. If they choose, they can spend up to 1D per Force skill to purchase it in the beginning. This means that only 15D remain for the rest of the attributes. However, once that first die is spent, the Force skills can be improved using the character's skill dice, of which they have 7D.

Reading the rules literally, a character could begin with 3D in a Force skill(s). 1D from the attribute dice pool and 2D from the skill dice pool. I am more of the mind that the most a character will start with is 2D in any given Force skill. I just feel it is more true to the idea that no specific skill gets more than 2D at character creation.

I completely agree with Mythologian. The initial Force Power dice are taken from Attibutes. Anything after that, well, if the player really wants to have 3D in C,S, & A that's fine. They usually miss those dice a lot when the shots start flying.

I find that 3D in a Force skill is not enough to do anything Earth-shattering (unless you're a Skywalker). It might not even save your life. Those 7 dice are usually better spent on dodge, con, etc. to make a more rounded and survivable character.

Yup. 3d is more than ok for a 10-14 number, but how many skills are needing a moderate only to activate? And since in most situations they would be doing more than just the 1 action, we have MAPS to take that down a notch to 2d or even back to 1d...
