Okay guys - simple question.

What do you all think would go alongside and/or be a prerequisite for getting your journeyman's (bachelors) in star ship repair?

Please use known skills unless you are stating scholar skills.

Well, if we use medicine as a example, you could say that this skill could be achieved with a masters degree (such as for a nurse practicianer), though in this case. So given that it is an advanced skill, I don't think a bachelor's degree would take the character to the advanced skill level necessarily, though it could if you wanted to.

Also, 3D is "trained," while 4D is "professional." Given that a journeyman quification represents more advanced training and experience, Id say 5D in th relevant skill (starship repair).

If he is a "full service" journeyman, he will also keed some dice in relevant systems not explicitly covered by the skill:

Computer programming/repair (for nav computers)
Droid programming/repair (astromechs)
Starship weapons repair
Starshiip Shields repair (I think tuat is a separate skill).

Those should probably be at 4D.

I think some scholar skills would be appropriate:
Scholar: engineering (mechanical and/or electrical)
Scholar: physics
Scholar: ??? Maybe one more, not sure.

Those should be at 3D.

That's based on my experience in college and in auto-tech school.

Naw I agree - I would think master's lvl education would be more akin to advanced skills knowledge.

This is for schooling to become a certified (licensed) starship mechanic within the new republic. But not a master mechanic in a union or anything.

I figured Journeyman would be the most appropriate title and many technical schools from my understand attribute the journeyman title for their students to be only given out after completing a bachelor's level degree in normally a major or two attributed to a certain field of technical expertise.

I like what you came up with.

Major in a type of Ship Repair (Capital, Transports, or Starfighter)
Minor in the associated skills (Comp, Droid, Associated Weapons)
* Shields is rolled into the base ship type repair now - think they changed that from 1e or something

Then simply chalk up the Knowledge skills are prerequisite courses that the schooling would enforce.

If you are going with those 2 scholar skills, imo you also need mathematics.

I thought about that, but, decided that they "included" the relevant math since, in auto tech school, we learned a bit about engineering, a bit about chemistry and physics, but only to the extent that it was relevant to the job. For example, what is "heat" (btus) and how can it be removed from a material (convection, evaporation, etc) in order to understand how an A/C works.

We had to learn electricity, building complex circuitry, parallel and series flow, etc. Its a lot more than just wrenching on nuts and bolts.

But, if math is a prereq, then engineering might as well be an advanced scholar skill, but I feel that defeats the purpose and goes outside the scope of the game and the spirit of the idea. YMMV.

Oh and for what its worth, I also give out "free" character points that MUST be spent on advancement cor characters receiving formal (especially paid for) training.

Completing a full academic load worth of modules, for example, might be worth 1 cp. Acing an exam might be worth 1 cp. Acing the final might he worth 2, and acing the practical might yield 3 cps... just as an example.
