Thanks galadrin!

Well as a military brat its not really a full on squad you are commanding.
It breaks down like this
Platoon leader commands 3-4 squad leaders.
Squad leaders command 3 fire team leaders and their grenadier.
Each fire team leader commands the 3 members of his fire team.
So at most via the 2e rules each officer needs 4d in command to successfully command the group.

Elegantly stated... and assumes all in communication, I suppose, which I don't think is mentioned in R&E.

It would take time for the orders to filter down, though....

That makes sense to me!

Thanks. As for the comms issue, since most pc's in battle keep open mikes to one another (or storm troopers with their tongue activated helmet mikes) that should be easy to do.

As jmanski mentions it would take time for the orders to filter down though.

Even though listening doesn't normally incur a MAP I'd be inclined to add a MAP for every step in the chain if they wanted to make sure they all fired in the same round that the order was given. To me that rolls into the fact that orders are given in a chain rather than all at once so you sacrifice speed for co-ordination.

So they can hear the order, pass it down the chain and have everyone ready to fire on the next round (no MAPs) or they can attempt to fire as soon as the order is given and have a penalty to the command roll.

For garhkal's example:
Platoon leader - "Squad leaders, fire everything you have at that tank now!"
Squad leaders (1 MAP) "Okay team leaders get your guys ready and all hit that tank!"
Team leaders (2 MAPs) "Okay guys everyone hit that tank now!"

Of course that means that the lower you are in the chain the higher your command needs to be to counteract the MAPs... unless big military groups always spend a round to co-ordinate actions.

Maybe instead of a MAP it just takes extra time, like a round per step in the chain. Realistically, it probably should take at least a round per step to coordinate, probably more like double the time per step.

I just don't see somebody really able to coordinate all the turbolasers on an ISD in one round.

A ship i agree, but in a ground battle, getting your squad to coordinate is imo ok for an action.

So when you're co-ordinating groups of people aiming and firing hand weapons then each step is a MAP but when you're co-ordinating groups of gunners calibrating and aiming guns then each step is a round?

That makes sense and it allows large groups of trained and discipled people to be powerful without just being instant death to anything.

And if you use one of the HRs i have put into play that the sparks group liked enough to adopt "Supression fire" that adds to the difficulty of enemy units TO co-ordinate fire.

That makes sense but does suppression fire do less damage because you're not focusing your attacks on kill shots just making sure the enemy has their head down?

When i wrote supression fire out, you rolled base damage against the area, but the difficulty to hit went up based on how big it was.. Then those in it got to dodge out to avoid damage. The way supression fire worked in sparks is only ADDS to the base difficulty to command a group of troops (or fighters etc), it does no damage..
