Was wondering if anyone can tell me if melee attack is also rolled when attacking with a lightsaber. And if possible, whatever answer I get, can you please lost where you got the information so I can end this debate once and for all with one of my players. Thank you

No, when defending, attacking, deflecting, or whatever with a lightsaber you use the lightsaber skill under Dexterity.

It should be in the core rule book Revised 2nd Edition, under the skill section. When you get to lightsaber skill it will say something like that.

Edit: ACTUALLY the lightsaber write up assumes you know you are suppose to use this. The Melee Combat entry, right after, tells you that Melee combat is NOT used for lightsabers.

So hope that helps. And sorry I am not sure about the page numbers.

For Second Edition see the Star Wars Skill List page 18. Lightsaber is listed as a seperate skill from Melee Combat and Parry. Page 74 also lists the skills separately and Melee Combat says, "This skill does not cover lightsabers."

For Second Edition Revised and Expanded see Melee Combat on page 39 - "Melee Combat is the "melee combat" skill used for all hand-to-hand weapons (except lightsabers, which is covered under the lighsaber skill)."

Oddly, and what may be causing your player's confusion, in both rules one can specialize under melee parry in parrying lightsabers. That always seemed odd to me and I house rule parries as specialization: parrying weapon rather than weapon parried.

To save time, I just did away with Melee Parry entirely and had Melee Combat cover both attack and defense rolls.

I'm leaning toward that, too.

I'm even considering moving Brawling to Dexterity (while still basing damage on Strength).

I prefer keeping both parry and attack as separate skills... especially on the brawl front. I know many people who fight who are good on offense or good on defense...

I took out both brawling parry and melee parry- you can specialize in one if you like...

I'm working on a martial art forms variant for my lightsaber forms variant rules, so that some forms would tend to be more defensive or offensively oriented, and would thus receive bonuses on either attack or defense.

I'm going to guess that you don't have a Second Edition or Second Edition Revised & Expanded book...
It's all covered in the skill descriptions.
