I'm curious how did force powers in 1st ed work? was there a break down of Control, Sense and Alter?

Were they combined like they are in Second Ed R&E where you have to roll multiple Dice pools just too activate a power?

Comparing first and Second ED R&E force powers which edition of those do you prefer and why?

Force Powers are almost identical between first and second edition. The "changes" such as they are are not so much with the powers themselves but with the rest of the game, and how it effects the way the Force powers work. With one notable exception.

In First Edition, the difficulties were originally set in increments of 5, for all tasks. For example a Moderate task was set at difficulty 15. Later, this was altered to provide the sliding scale that has been used since them.

First Edition didn't have the Wild Die, either, so some character simply couldn't make certain skill rolls. FOr example, a character rolling 3D could never make a Difficulty (20). roll.

Also, in First Edition, there were no character points, per say. Character got skill points that they could spend to improve skills, but they couldn't spend them to roll extra dice.

These modest differences between the editions mean that Force Powers are a bit easier for second edition characters.

The notable exception, between the two systems is the lightsaber combat power. This didn't exist in first edition. Instead, had the option of using their Sense skill to parry, and could add their Control to lightsaber damage.

This meant that using a lightsaber, deflecting blaster bolts and such is easier in second edition, once a character is good enough to get the power up reliably, but that characters will be suffering a -2D multliaction penalty throughout the combat.

Believe it or not, that makes quite a bit of difference is how Jedi play out in the game.

There was ONE way in which 1st Jedi had it easier.

Any character with a Force Skill could use ALL of the powers associated with it (although if a power required 2 or even 3 then the character would still need both or all 3 force skills)

1st Ed Force users did not need to choose a couple of powers or learn new ones.

In practical terms though as atgxtg points out that just meant that 1st Ed Jedi had more powers which they had no chance of actually using!
