Hello All

Its been a while but some friends and I have started another D6 SW Group. When in a starship do you make your players declare fire arcs for their shields or do you just let them apply for all fire arcs. Rule seems like it can be controversial especially with a "Killer GM" who always has ships shoot you were you aren't protected. Any thoughts, plus if anyone has an online game looking for another player I may be interested. Got an online bug again and want to either play or GM. Thanks.

Declare the arc when the sheild roller activates them. Reactionary shield roll to repush the shields into a different arc. This is why the enemy have tactics, scanners and such, to see where you don't have your shields up at.

Although in one on one dogfights you generally only need to put your shields up in one arc at a time unless your opponant is awesome.

Declare arcs.

Part of tactics is getting people to shift the shields to the wrong side and hit 'em hard.

I assume split arcs, split 4 ways it hurts, split in half it still hurts (based on ship scale, larger ships have their shield code modified to fit fact I balance around a two split), shields roll to focus, and when focused obviously open from another angle. Full shield coverage may help with being hit but it doesn't help with being hit alot.

i have to agree with the general consensus here, declare arcs. it adds a nice layer of strategy to space combat. and as long as you do the same for the npc combatants there shouldn't be too much to complain about.

I know many groups of PCs who try to use that to their advantage, by out 'tacticing' the enemy and getting their guns into the opponents unshielded side..

If you did not have to declare arcs, and the same rules were applied to capital ship combat, there would be some capital ships that would be essentially invincible, even against multiple enemy capital ships, barring flukes. The Mon Cal Star Cruiser comes to mind.

Why does the Mon Cal star cruiser come to mind? IIRC 7d hull and 3d shields.

Because it has many dice of backup shields, which could be applied to the ship as a whole whenever it lost a dice of shields, instead of just one arc.

6D Hull for a MonCal. But with the backup shields, it could last longer than an SD.

Right, but the text says a backup shield may only be brought up after a sheild goes down.
