Ok.
I think I messed up.
When Calculating Damage, if the player beats the damage roll then they take no damage?
I thought the 0-3 rating which means a character is Stunned meant that if the character was hit at all, they were at least Stunned.
Then I read in the SW R+E that if they beat the damage roll that they take no damage.
So does the "0" in 0-3 means that if you tie the roll, that you are Stunned but if you roll higher than it, you are unaffected by the attack?
It has just gotten me abit confused.
If beating the Damage roll with your Strength means that you take no damage, then I have a few players that are gonna be pissed!
Can anyone help me? |

Yup, that's right, you've got some pissed players ahead of you. If you beat the damage roll, you take no damage whatsoever (your armor absorbed it, it was just a glance shot, etc). If you tie or loose by 3, you're stunned, and so on. |

I always thought of zero damage as being when the bad guy hits the hero in the mouth, and the hero just smiles at him, after wiping off that little trickle of blood. _________________ Know Jesus, Know Peace.

Yes, by the rules, if the roll is tied, the character is stunned. If the roll is higher, the character takes no damage. This, of course, leads to the infamous problem of "blaster proof wookiees".
So many GMs are always trying to figure out how to explain away that little problem of saying, "You hit! Roll damage. *pause* Oh... Okay, the blaster hits your bare skin and....does no damage."
I've gone to the method of saying that if the character gets hit, even if their resistance roll is above the damage roll, I still give out semi-superficial damage. I numb an appendage that is hit. I ruin clothes with burn marks and issue 1st and 2nd degree burns to the character, and I sometimes even up the difficulty number for their next action by 2 or 3 points, just so I don't have players the "...leap into the middle of the hallway and start blasting the stormtroopers, because they can't really hurt me since I have 6D Strength."
So you could keep doing what you're doing, simply to avoid those annoying problems, or you could hang your head and tell your players that they're right, you're wrong, and from now on they'll have blaster proof characters a lot of the time. |

In my games blasters are usually pretty lethal. I mean it's never less than a 4D Blaster Pistol, usually a 5D heavy blaster or worse. And most players have STR of about 2D+2/4D usually with a +1 from a blast vest added. So statistically the damage will always beat STR doing at least stun damage. I have a player who's been killed by a single Blaster Pistol shot countless times, if it weren't for those darn Character Points.
BTW, don't you think that being allowed to spend up to 5 Character Points to resist damage is a bit abusive? That means you'd only die if you wanted to. |

My players always spend CP as soon as they get them. I think the 2nd highest in the party has like 3 CP? The highest has 27, but he's played the game before... |

Or that you spend all your time not advancing, just staying alive...=) Reminds me a bit of Xander and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG, actually.
On the subject for damage, BACK IN THE DAY I used to own 2nd Edition, and I swore there were some damage modifiers for hit location (+1d for Head and -1d for Torso, with base damage for Arms and Legs), but SWR&E didn't mention it and I wasn't having any luck finding it mentioned anywhere else, until I was scouting out the Moonswing Chronicles and saw the errata and FAQ mentioned it...
Does that mean I wasn't imagining it? And if so, were the modifiers actually what I thought they were?
I only ask because die caps and damage modifiers are two things I remembered quite enjoying from playing the game several years ago.

Yea, I used the damage modifier for head shots or other "called shots" to critical locations.
A 6D str wookie is a freakin tank and it does get annoying when the player plays it that way. The best way to fix that problem is to always have the biggest gun shooting at him and/or have most of the blasts comming his way in any given situation. I mean, if youre a huge, pile of hair charging stright into battle you have to expect everyone to shoot at you first. And, with all those shots comming his way chances are obviously higher that one of them will do some damage, even with less dice.
The CP thing is pretty easy to get around. Just roll the damage behind a screen, they wont know how bad theyre hit. You can even tell them that they need to use a cp to avoid damage or that its serious and they might want to use a few. This way, even when they use cp's the sometimes still take damage. |

I hate being wrong.
Sigh.
Thanks for all the help.

How about:
You're hit right square in the data pad! It's destroyed, but you're OK.
You felt the heat from that one; a near miss but he thinks he got you. Who need eyebrows, anyway?
You can feel your blood pouring out all over your back, oh wait, it's just your canteen.
It's just a scratch, a flesh wound, you've had worse!
That'll leave a scar!
That hit in the leg doesn't hurt, but you can't walk straight! Oh, the heel of your boot is gone!
There's a smoking hole in your blast vest but it stopped the shot. You'll need a new blast vest.
There's a hole in your cloak! Your cloak is ruined!
A bird disintigrates right in front of you. I guess you're gonna be OK. _________________ Know Jesus, Know Peace.

Some what, but the shooter can also add in 2 CP for his damage.
But i have had people spend those 5 cp to 'save their butts' and STILL be under the damage i rolled...... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

the part about blaster proof wookies... well, it never hurt to have a few speeder bikes around, and when your in military training, they tell you, aim your biggest weapon at the biggest target. If you had this big guy running at you with a bootknife in his hand, shoot him with an RPG, or a flamethrower.
could you imagine what those two things would do to a wookie? being hit with a flamethrower would roast all the skin off and atleast leave 3rd degree burns all over the body. |

Oh gosh- I thought that was just me! My blaster-proof Talz just got shot by about a dozen stormtroopers and an E-WEB and took no damage- the worst I could do to him was to have him humiliatingly 'patchy' with most of his fur burned away. I have started implementing a house rule that after 5 or more times getting shot in a combat, a character has to start rolling stamina (an Easy difficulty at first, with increasing difficulty for each shot) to keep their cumulative injuries (after all, every shot represents a blindingly painful, scorching instance of GETTING SHOT, something that would probably lay you or I flat on the floor, but simply isn't injurious enough to affect the stats of a trained soldier) from combining into a wounded-equivalent -1D penalty; that way, getting shot multiple times will, eventually, still have consequences. (Of course, this doesn't apply for getting shot in armor repeatedly, just repeated 'non-injuring' shots to the body).
Meanwhile, I usually don't describe the type of hit until after the damage is rolled, so if they beat the strength, I can describe it as a painful graze, a clothes-or-hair-damaging singe, etc.- only brushing aginst their skin, charring it, to explain the lack of damage.

Likewise, thought this was only me! For my current batch, if I don't hand out CP like candy, they DIE- and only the wimps that hang back in combat and save up their points can ever improve their characters! _________________ Star Wars: Marvels, the audio drama: www.nolinecinemas.com
