As a kid I genuinely thought that there were five Star Wars films (this is back at the time when there were only three).
Becuase I had quite vivid dreams of another two.
One (because vivid does not have to be the same as imaginative) was a thinly veiled Star Wars remake of Operation Daybreak, only this time it was Rebel Resistance not Czechs and Vader not Heydrich.
I ran that as a three-parter adventure and despite the fact that Vader survived and the PCs died it went down very well. I WAS prepared for the canon to be derailed if PCs had been smart enough / lucky enough and tbh didn't really have a continuity plan (just a vague idea that 'anyone' could be in the suit of black armour and cloning was mentioned in the movies!)

In my campaigns that maintained film continuity, I've used characters from the movies here and there. Rebel PCs have met Rebel heroes and leaders on Rebel bases like Hoth, etc., but they were mostly cameos and never figured into the stories much. I haven't use any movie villains so far except for Tessek, the quarren in Jabba's palace.
However, just for the fun of it, I'm going to throw several special appearances into the initital adventure of my next campaign, which takes place about 2 years before ANH. The story will take the PCs from Calamari to Coruscant, and I figured out ways to include cameos by Leia, Threepio, Artoo, Vader, Ackbar, Jabba, Bib Fortuna, and Tessek (and by dramatic cut-away scene, Palpatine and Tarkin). They really won't have a chance to interact with any of them directly.
...The PCs will be hired to escort an outer rim polical official to meet with an unknown but sympathetic young Imperial senator, and just as they come up on the meeting place and see a teenage girl with two droids, an "assasin" attacks and Darth Vader shows up out of nowhere to "save Leia's life", right in front of the PCs eyes, blowing their meeting with her. Of course they get to witness the first meeting of Vader and the new senator from Alderaan. The "assassin" is really an agent of Vader's and the assasination attempt was staged so that the PCs could be framed (and Leia could be intimidated to stay in the Emperors good graces). This will also introduce a major antagonist of the PCs in the campaign (Vader's agent)...
Over the course of the campaign, the PCs won't join the Rebellion, but they may run into Leia and the droids again. They may also run into Lando, or Han and Chewie on their way out to the Corporate Sector. A trip to Tatooine could occur where they bump into a Luke and Biggs. Maybe the Force-PC might even be lucky enough to get some pointers from Old Ben Kenobi. Or maybe an astrogation mishap leads them to Dagobah? The better hope they don't run into Vader, but he may show up in the story near the campaign's climax.
I think special appearances like these can be fun if they only occur in occasional adventures. _________________ *

I once played a Jawa ace tech, he and his only friend a jedi padawan loved taking tourist pic's of everything, imagine there surprise when across the tarmac they say Han, R2D2 and chewie, can you imagine those NPC faces when we asked them for a group photo.
R2D2 nearly killed me with his little lightning arc.
Another character (my favouirte) Kira Firestorm a Twi'lek seduced Wes Janson. _________________ "To find our future, we must look to our past" |

I use the movie (or EU) characters wherever I can do something interesting with them.
So I’m setting up a romance with Lando and one of the PCs that could end up lasting (in an off and on way) several years.
Moff Panaka (from Episode I) is a major foe (and sometime’s ally) for the group.
I had a wookiee PC meet Chewie and learn that the reason he never goes home is that he hates his wife (and vice versa) but divorce is dishonorable and they both agree that its best for their kid that stay married. Though he hates that his wife named the kid Lumpy.
(The idea was to put a whole new, ironic, spin on the Star Wars Holiday Special)
I’m also going to reveal that Chewie has been working for Mon Mothma since Episode III and that he’s the real brains behind the Han and Chewie team (though Han is oblivious to this).
I’ve got a plan for the Ziosen Sha Force User to swing by Dagobah and Yoda will apologize for giving the orders that caused the rift between their people and the Jedi 500 years ago. I’m also toying with having them all go on an adventure which explains why Yoda is dying in ROTJ.
I’ve got a vague notion of the heroes bumping into Vader while he’s ‘shopping’ for a starfighter he really likes. (As some elite custom engineering company – of course.)
I did let one of the characters take Luke’s virginity. But that was that characters last adventure and she’d been crushing on Luke the whole campaign.
So Panaka as a bad guy. Lando in stable-ish relationship. Chewie as a deadbeat dad and super spy. Yoda apologizing for making bad decisions. Yoda sneaking off Dagobah between films. Vader getting his starfighter hot-rodded. Luke having a one night stand.
I love to use the Movie characters. But only when I can find something NEW and unexpected to do with them. The idea is that the movies were just the tip of the iceberg. I want to show that these people are real three dimensional people who have lives outside of the narrow stereotypes my players envision them in.

Funny! Since I posted my 2009 post, I thought up more ideas for my campaign regarding the film characters, including Yoda and Vader. What if Yoda didn't go strait to Dagobah when he went into exile after the Rise of the Empire? What if he went to the remote sector of space that will be the main setting for my next campaign? What if the path of the Force-using PC will eventually bring him to Yoda and he gets some instrumental training needed for the campaign's climax? What if the heroes each have their simlumtaneous climaxes against the Empire that cut-away to each other, interspliced with a lightsaber battle between Yoda and Vader? I bet players wouldn't see that coming! And what if Vader slashes Yoda pretty bad before falling away from Vader? Perhaps Yoda's blood-soaked cloak will be left behind for Vader to take back to his Emperor, making them think that Yoda is probably dead. And maybe that would explain why Yoda goes from a great CG bad@ss warrior to a decrepit old muppet by the time Luke meets him on Dagobah. _________________ *

I think my GM might have our bounty hunter (Iotran PC) take on Boba Fett. |

For the finale of my campaign I am thinking of maybe taking on Count Dooku or one of his numerous apprentices, haven't decided yet. _________________ Do or Do Not ...there is no try. -Yoda |

Does marrying Wes Janson count then?
My Twi'leck Kira Firestorm has been dating him for a while, and this is after Endor when he retired after Rogue and Wraith squadran. _________________ "To find our future, we must look to our past" |

We like to occasionally have characters from the Movies or the EU show up in cameos.
One Coynite PC stood in a long line in a starport to get some paperwork filled out. In line with him was “a human pilot.” When the pilot used con to jump ahead in line, the PC nearly got in a fight with the pilot’s Wookie friend. The player figured out towards the end who she had met, the character never did.
Another player runs a smuggler who hates Platt O’Keefe. Whenever she hears O’Keefe’s name she always says “that sl*t.”
A group of characters saved Mon Mothma’s life and were awarded medals by her. They also heard her give a speech. As a side note, the speech was actually written and recited for Mon Mothma by one of the players.
Our campaign started about three years prior to the Battle of Yavin. The players have frequently been involved in setting up things that impact the SW Movies and the wider universe. The PCs were responsible for the escape of the Incom X-Wing design team along with the starfighter plans and prototypes. They also helped pass along the Death Star plans to the courier that delivered them to Princess Leia.
If not for those PCs the Rebel’s wouldn’t have known about the Death Star exhaust port and Red Squadron would have been flying Y-Wings in the assault and Luke and Wedge would both have been vaped by Vader. |

I very rarely use them, but it happens. Mostly I use the small background characters. Tagge Corp shows up from time to time, and in some cases I let them meet Tagge him self. Recently my players "hitch hiked" with Kren Blista Vanee, and got to stay for a while at his castle at Byss. One of the characters, who is a bounty hunter and a SEVERELY wanted rebel, came up with the brilliant idea of handing over his business card to Vanee -with correct name on it... Within a few hours the entire planet was surrounded by a blockade, and the Executor lay in orbit. After some running around and few stupid decisions they stod face to face with Darth Vader. They where all force users... _________________ If you fall seven times, get up eight times. |

all the time in Supporting or Antagonist roles, but the more central they are to the Original Trilogy the less face time and impact on the game they have unless it's an absolute Must. |

I tend to avoid places and characters from the movies, although I have had my character on Adumar once before. (Twice if you count the fact that he stole a blade fighter and got shot back down in less than a minute...)
My philosophy is that the galaxy is huge, and the odds against running into a known character by chance is vast. Now if my player decided he wants to track down Boba Fett and kill him for his armor and somehow manages to succeed, (that won't be an easy fight.) Then I have no real problem with the continuity being changed. In fact I told him at the start, "You want to go kill Vader? That's fine with me, but I'd improve some skills and come up with a good plan, first!" _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

I avoid using characters from the movies/books/comics. I bring in my own cast of characters and make the story my own. Of the campaigns I have run, only one has taken place during established timeline, and that story was run a long ways away from where the iconic characters from the films were. |

Randoms character, Zookie, (a young jedi woman) was captured by Bossk quite recently.... (Luckily she wasnt a Wookie or she would have ended up on the skinning table)... A certain female dark jedi from the Clone Wars series has recently 'kidnapped' Zookie just after she turned to the dark side..
Zookie just cant seem to get a break.. _________________ My Biggest Beard Retard award goes to: The Admiral of course.. |

Zookie as in - FAZOOK! ?
FYI - fazook is the sound of force lightning being thrown/invoked. It was one of the first words my friend's daughter learned at about age 2 or so. She also had the Palpatine gesture down. Of course she like huggy our gargoyles as if they were teddy bears. Beware! This is what happens when you teach children to enjoy Star Wars and roleplay from an early age. |
