Sith Sword

Model: Sith Sword
Type: Alchemically reinforced blade
Scale: Character
Skill: Melee combat: Sith sword
Cost: Not available for sale
Availability: 4
Difficulty: Moderate
Damage: STR+2D
Game Notes: This weapon is indestructible, being able to even parry lightsabers and blaster bolts. Anyone wielding this weapon automatically loses a Force Point and gains a Dark Side Point, which is lost if not used at some point during the battle.
Source: Tales of the Jedi Companion (page 82), The Dark Side Sourcebook (pages 58-59)

So, then. Does anyone know what the Game Notes here actually means. As far as I can tell: it causes you to loose a Force Point whever you wield it. You gain a dark side point. No idea how you are supposed to use it. At the end of the battle you loose the dark side point. That seems to make no sense.

I think it means that you cannot 'use' the DSP after the battle.

I just remove any such craptacular rules. Given that the RAW DSPs are a very crude scale of ones journey to the dark side I think that a DSP for using a Sith Sword is a bit OTT.

Normally, if you are tempted with a DSP and accept it, it allows you to add 1d to whatever roll tempted you. In this case, probably an attack roll with the sword. So basically, if you don't use the bonus die that the DSP granted you before the end of the battle, you lost it.

To me, it means every time you go into combat, it takes a FP from you but gives it back in the form of a DSP which can be used or NOT depending on whether you desire it. It is the swords way to taint/lure you to the dark side.

its like any other time you use/do something of the dark side, you gain both a FP and a DSP. The DSP is your ;tracker'; of how close to the dark side you are going, while the FP is what you spend to double your dice.
Same with calling ON the dark side. BUT this does not have you do that, it takes a FP and grants you one back but the one back is tainted (hence the DSP).

If not used in that combat, the 'floating' dsp linked force point is gone.

Garhkal - I think that must have been what they intended. It really is not clear. Of course, this makes it quite unappealing as you loose a perfectly good normal Force Point in order to gain a tainted one that must be used now. I was just wondering if anyone had been able to decipher this rather cryptic rule. I think I'll stay with my own rules for Sith Swords - which make them a little more tempting and therefore far more dangerous to the unwary.

Thanks for the replies BTW. Every so often you encounter something in the text that just doesnt make any sense. This ones been bothering me for years Smile

BTW, I have a 'combat oriented' NPC Inquisitor who is working under a Grand Inquisitor with an in depth knowledge about Sith alchemy, including the making of the swords.

Is there any reason why these swords may not be vibro blade (or any other tech-blade)?

I've always suspected that the process for making a sith sword so resistant was a very rough one and it would be incompattible with something that has a mechanism/moving parts.

And you can't use sith alchemy on the metal beforehand because then you can't shape it into a blade.

I was also thinking perhaps something like a Power Sword..no moving parts, only energy.

A power sword needs to be able to conduct electricity, I suspect a Sith sword is a universal constant, nothing about it changes ever. Otherwise it would still heat up when used to parry a lightsaber and after a few blows it'd start to get too hot to hold.

On the plus side you never need to sharpen it, on the minus side it's limited to being a sharp lump of indestructible material.

True, but that indestructable metal is a lot more nasty when used.

It's a minus in terms of upgradability... it will always be a sharp lump of indestructible metal even if what you need right a conductive material to temporarily route power around the damaged cable in your freighters power core.

True true. Didn't think of that, but to be honest, if I was in the situation you just described i wouldn't think to use the blade then anyway. I do see what you are getting at however.
