I was thinking the other day that the notion of a mysterious 'master race', often extinct under mystical circumstances, pops up now and then both in fantasy and sci-fi.
I seem to remember something similar mentioned in a RPG SW, perhaps when discussion the spread of humanity and how near-humans came to be discovered on different planets. Does this ring a bell or am I completely of the track here? |

You may be thinking of the Celestials or Rakata. Of course, both are believed to be extinct... but you could bring them into your game if that's your fancy.
Or you could do like I am and use the same concept at a planetary, rather than galactic, level.

Great, the 'Celestials' seem to be somewhat what Im after (though the name gotta be some kind of code name). No I dont plan to bring them back to life, just some technology (probably under Imperial lock-down).
None of my players have any knowledge of pre-movies star wars history, just wondered if the 'concept' was already in the SW universe. |

Could try and involve Centerpoint Station or something... I'm sure there's probably some of their other tech hidden somewhere out there too. Go wild.

The reason that got me thinking of this was that I remembered the 'digital weapons' of the 40K universe, which were created by an extingt 'old ones' race. |

Actually the digital weapons are built by the Jokaero, seen here. A race that still survives in seldom mentioned corners of background text of 40K
They themselves however are hypothesisted to have been created by the Old ones in their struggle against the Necrons

The damn dirty apes 
That figure looks like an oragatang to me. Their more than ape-like in appearance if you ask me if that figure represents what they look like. And they came to Earth where they have largely devovled.

They're often described as Orangutan-esk
There is a lot of cool background stuff from the Rogue Trader days of 40K some of it has been retconned but a lot of it has just been largely forgotten.

Wait, now we know who the Old Ones really are. Their Saheelindeeli. But in the time it took to travel from the SW galaxy to the Milky Way (remember, the events in the SW universe took place a long time ago in a galaxy far far away) they came to look like mere oragutangs, and became technologically brilliant
Ok, joking aside. Time to get somewhat serious. I can't be entirely sure but I think the Rakata on Lehon around 4,956 BBY refered to their ancestors of the Infinite Empire as the Old Ones. Or maybe their computers did.

I ran an entire campaign that was centered around the celestials and the question that no-one seems to ask "Why are the no ancient civilisations left."

| If we can jump back on the Rattaka, according to the Unknown Regions Sourcebook, they are actually still alive. So, that might be something to consider, if you want to do something along the lines of a "treasure hunter" campaign. Looking for ancient Rattaka artifacts and whatnot. |

the ancient ones or "ancients" as I called them in my old game, built a lot of weird objects. i was way off on the evolution of lightsabers, i had lightsabers as left over ancient technology adapted by force users. before that, during the xim era, the force user weapon of choice was a baton-like weapon called a "ripaalsu shandaak" which had repulsor motors in it. it looked like an extendable baton and could be used to do bone shattering strikes and the repulsors could be used to parry slugthrowers, not unlike lightsaber combat.
the ancients built a few other things, but the primary source of ancient scary things was xim and the early republic...
