Running a "dead" game isn't a problem. There's plenty of material to support a campaign or five. It's all new to you, which is what matters! After one campaign, you'll probably have ideas of your own that may have nothing to do with Star Wars, so as far as material goes, you're pretty much set for life.

Don't sweat canon; Lucas didn't sweat it much, either, but his movies still work if you don't nitpick them to death. Veteran players probably won't (and certainly shouldn't!) be nitpicking your campaign to death, so go with it. If you're really concerned, just put the action somewhere far from events in the movies. Having fun in your game is more important than lockstep consistency; create the scenario you want to create, and let your players run with it. If they give you guff about how there can be only two sith or whatever, tell 'em that this is how things are in your Star Wars universe and let them come up with explanations why.

d6 Star Wars is a GREAT place to start for two big reasons. First, their products offer some of the best advice for first-timers I've ever seen. My two cents, though: I suggest you tone down the "action-action-action-never-stop-for-a-breath" approach the books sometimes adopt to merely "lots of action."

Second, it strikes a great balance for novice GMs between simplicity and thoroughness. It's not so big and complicated that you can't digest the rules (D&D or GURPS can be intimidating for first-timers), nor is it so freeform that you feel adrift (as novice GMs often do with the rules-lite systems I tend to prefer).

Robin's Laws is another good resource for general GM advice, especially on using modularity to keep an adventure rolling. S. John Ross's big list of plots webpage is also handy for getting started on an adventure:

Well? How did you get on?

Our own group is likely to hand the next campaign slot to a first-timer, and any perspective I can gain from beginners feeling a little intimidated on what it's like could help me coach her along.
