True. But if it's a ship based ion cannon, then why not just shoot them with a laser; at the difference in scale, they trooper is still rendered ineffective.
If it's personal scale ion weapons, you're still having to effect something speeder scale (I think it speeder or walker scale, anyhow) and ion weapons are notorious for doing less damage than their blaster counterparts.
Still, not as ninja evil as the Storm Commandos, or anywhere and everywhere evil nasty as the Royal guard. Still scary, and more populous than either of the two. |

It is always determined by who runs them.
Some GMs make them useless mooks reguardless of their training and capabilities, while others can make even the most typical stormtroopers something to be feared.

Chello!
I'd have to say any Stormie not in the films.
I loved it in the first Zahn trilogy, maybe the first book (been awhile since I read them), how they used actual military style tactics. I'm thinking specifically of the scene when they're herding Mara and Luke. Give them some grenades, let them coordinate with helm-coms and the PCs are so hosed.

My players once got stuck on a landing pad (on a starport tower) pinned down by a couple of Storm commandos using heavy sniper rifles (well, basically a sniper modified E-web). One closest calls my characters has experienced as the SC were positioned on an adjacent starport tower out of reach for the players. |

Well if you're gonna go for the Royal Guard then how about stepping things up a bit to the Imperial Soverign Protectors. The Royal Guard are the best, the Sovereign Protectors are the best of the best, with the ability to use the Force coupled with stormtrooper and then Royal Guard training they'd be someone not to be tangled with unless you had the skills to stand up to them. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!

For the campaign i am in with the sparks group, i actually came up with 2 npcs who are the leader and subleader for the royal guard. The leader is a force user, but his skill and renown amongst his troops, along with the loyalty they show to him is why palpaltine has kept him in the role. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

ones armed with cs gas
why?
1. MFTAS
2. stormtroopers armor filters out cs gas. pc's will be hurtin'
3. stormtroopers armor is white. maybe to hide them in gas clouds... |

That is why a lot of my stormie groups use a trio of smoke grenades before wading in. Their MFAS filters it out so they suffer less penalties than the PC's do. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

But the MFTAS bonus in general is used to counter the penalty for hitting a moving target, which kind of evens out in the end. |
