I wanted to make this a poll, but there are way too many variants! They are as bad as TIE fighters.... hey maybe I should start a TIE fighter thread.
But first, I would like to know what the board thinks about stormtroopers. Who is the one you run from? _________________ For many years West End Games ruled justly until the evil Empire defeated them. The Empire now rules with an iron fist and the d20. No contest here. Storm Commandos take the cake and slit the baker's throat without anyone noticing.
It's been a long standing tradition in the games of my group, if you need to up the ante and instill the fear of GM into your players, you drop a couple of Men in Black into the fray. In the beginning we simply used them as powerful Stormies, but in time we learned to use them properly as stealthy, cunning commandos. I think the best battles we've had in our long years of gaming have been against those versatile shadow troopers. Setting up explosives, monofilament wire traps, wielding garrotes from darkened corners, or powerful carbines from across a corridor. Hiding in the shadows and sneaking around you. Gotta love them.
Their inclusion alone makes Fragments from the Rim one of mu favourite books. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

It's a tie.
Imperial Storm Commands, cause as Gry said, cake stealing and throat slitting.
The only thing matching them in fear factor is: The Imperial Royal Guard.
These guys are insane... and after reading the Crimson Empire series. (2 TPBs) The intensity of their training regiment is just insane. The stats in the books reflect only the bare bare minimum of their butt kickery. |

Yes, Royal Guards are badass. The problem is that it's terribly unlikely your group will ever face them. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

If you read through Rules of Engagement, the IRG are rotated into the various stormtrooper divisions to keep their skills sharp. So, if the GM decided, the PCs could be facing down some terribly badass stormtroopers wearing the normal stormtrooper armor. And the PCs might not realize it til after they either kill the guard, or do some investigating. |

Very true. The whole "rotating elite troopers" thing was one of WEG's sneakier moves. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

I'd most fear stormtroopers run by PCs. And I know they're out there. |

Anybody who cuts the Baker's throat after taking the cake is one scary dude! I would agree that they are probably not the dudes I would wanna run into.

Yeah Crimson Empire was really good, I never got around to reading the second one. I always thought the Crimson Guard were the coolest, I remember being so pround of my Red Robed action figure when I was a kid. I always thought it was lame we never got to see them in action. I actually did use them once, and Carnor Jax. They crashed a party some of my PC's were at. He wasn't after them, but they did try to stop him. Again, it was one of those times when the Universe seemed out to get them.

WINNER! without a military command structure to keep their basest insticts in check, with years of experience, training and contacts across the Galaxy- definately the LAST group I would wanna stumble across. What's worst of all though is I can imagine a group of PC's getting someone imporant mad at them and having ANY of the above coming after them.
Of course, not all stormtroopers are scary. Like the LingerieTrooper. Anybody wanna venture a guess about the stats of this particular servant of the Empire?

Space Troopers. The above cannot be down played in their devilish scariness and their brutal efficiency. However, if you're in a ship, these guys are a terror. Once they get to your ship., they can crack it open and crawl in side. And if the decompression and vacuum does kill you, this things weapon systems and enhanced strength will. Few have what is required to deal with space trooper once it gets inside.
Now, if they just didn't look so stupid... |
