Hi guys!

I remember I read something about regular Jedi training exercises, like the lightsaber training with the wax tapers and the ball bearings, but I believe others are mentioned as well. I believe there are also some exercises for Telekinesis training and possibly others as well.

It would help me a lot if you could describe with some detail the exercises that you may have used in your games or that might appear in other material that I don't have access to.

The one I have used in the past was to drive Plastnails into plastboards of varying hardness via Telekinesis. It was important that the nails went in with just a single stroke. For added difficulty you could place nails of varying color on the board, where all nails with the same color had to be driven in simultaneously without moving any of the others. Also the board could be held up in the air by Telekinesis and was not to move when the nails were driven inside.

I remember a few Jedi training exercises we had in our group.

To train Absorb/Dissipate Energy, the Master subjected the student to increasingly stronger sources of energy. At first he was required to stand naked under the desert sun for the whole day, using the Force to avoid getting sunburned. First days were painful, but eventually he could stand there without problems, then moving on to other things like small fires and such...

We had one Life Detection exercise that involved chasing a Squib in a forest. It turned out to be quite a complete exercise, requiring the student to use several aspects of the Force to jump obstacles, swim rivers, all the while sensing the Squib's whereabouts.

I'll try to recall some others...

Hi Akari,
The exercises you are thinking of are described in Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments from the Rim. (pg 70). The book refers to them as "cadences"

If you don't have the book, one of the cadences involves setting up candles around the room, and using your lightsaber to put the flame out without hitting the wax. Another involves opening a bottle and using telekinesis to remove all the air from the bottle and corking it.

They also did some cadence like exercises in the Jedi Academy Training manual. They don't work very well as a mechanics-oriented device, and thus they haven't been converted. However, if you're looking for some fluff or narrative, then it might work.

Yeah, I'm really not looking for any rules, just fluff for my new Character to describe what I do as training regimen... Wink

And thanks a bunch for the replies already... Damn I'd really love to take a look into that Galaxy Guide again! My former GM took it all from me... 150 Euro worth of Ebay stuff and later he said those were all his, cause his name was scribbled inside... Confused

The one i remember most vividly was where you had 2 bottles. One filled with sand and a few other particles, and one with 2 types of liquid. You had to use TK (and other senses) to feel out the other items in each bottle and get them out piece by piece without removing any of the normal stuff.

That does sound more like what a Jedi Master would do to keep his skills at top shape then what you would give your Padawan to train with, but it does give me some ideas...

Like you could start with different colored marbles, work your way down over colored ball bearings down to colored sand and try and divide it with telekinesis.

I always thought that most of the exercises in GG9 were just absurdly advanced and dettached from everyday Jedi life. I mean, come on, moving particles around?!

If I was the GM I would probably disallow that, unless its a character who is on par with Yoda, powerlevel wise...

But something thats still visible, and if its only sand could be moved more easily, and in fact would probably challenge the patience of the practitioner more then his force abilities.

I really think that a set of Jedi training regimens is one of the things that is seriously lacking in the SW RPG. I had assumed that when they were doing a sourcebook on the Jedi Academy Trilogy that we would get SOMETHING on how to run characters through the academy, but instead we got just a bunch of useless character profiles as well as some dumb machinery.

I understand the concept of kata's, but I agree that the stuff in the GG9 just wouldn't be all that interesting to run in a game, or it's just pushing the edge of what Star Wars is about (I.E. moving molecules).

WEG was going to produce a Jedi Galaxy Guide, that would probably have had some really great training stuff in it. But unfortunately Lucasarts dissuaded them from doing it, since it would all probably wind up being trumped by the movie coming out in 1999, and WEG was going to wait until then to do the book.

The rest is dismal history.

Now that I have read through the candences again, I now remember why I... well, still remember them!

I doubt anybody in Galactic history has ever cleared the 5th cadence. It requires more then 30 consecutive rolls of a difficulty between 55 and 90!

I believe THE highest roll in our campaign ever was something around 50 when the wild die went crazy with our Verpine with his crazy first aid skill...

Agreed. A book really should be published detailing all the inner-workings of life in the Jedi Order, padawan exercises, maps of the Jedi Temple, Knighting trials, the process of becoming a Master. Everything. It's really amazing that they have managed not to release such pivotal stuff.

There's quite a bit of information on the various practices and such of the force in Jedi vs Sith: The essential guide to the Force, but it's mostly history and some practices.

Keep in mind that WEG Star Wars book was more about the original trilogy and the smuggler/scoundrel type of Star Wars galaxy. Not much was really known about the Old Jedi Order.
If I recall they even lost their licence before Episode I came out, didn't they.
And thats what I like about D6 Very Happy It is from a time where Star Wars was about people. Real people.
I hasn't been corrupted by the New Trilogy where it's all about the Jedi and the clones. The cool characters that sell a lot of toys.
But I agree that you sometimes need these Prequal Trilogy stats ect. for the game, but it's nothing you can't write up yourself based on existing material, right?
And as for story elements and hows/why/whens... well, then there's always wookieepedia Wink
