Capsule: Developed by Walex Blissex who also designed the Victory Star Destroyer and the Delta-7 Aethersprite starfighter, but it never left the prototype stage at Kaut Drive Yards before he left there due to his outrage over the things the (new) Empire was doing. He also took his designs with him.

It is not known how other people got them (He has refused to talk about it, aside to say that he did *NOT* sell it!), but a number of them later came onto the market from various shipyards (Not all of them legitimate.).

Externally, it's almost identical to the A-Wing, but it's systems were not as robust or high grade as the Rebellion-Era fighter, and the vessel required even more time being maintained than most starfighters, but it was the fastest around for it's time. It's lack of armour was very telling, and even with the assistance of shields, it was barely better than a Tie Fighter.

A good fighter for it's era, but when the X-Wing and Tie Interceptor came out, they were overmatched, and the A-Wing killed all demand for it altogether. But, during the rise of the Empire, it was a good interceptor for any group that needed one.

(Note: This fighter was seen on occasion in the "Star Wars: Droids" Cartoon.).

Edit: This fighter also had the nickname "A-Wing" as well, from the shape of the craft. However, this was not the official name, unlike the actual A-Wing, and can cause confusion among people who don't know the history of the fighter.

Interesting. Not a bad idea!

Good write up, as well.

One thing I thought would be a "telling" sign between a R-22 and an A-Wing is the placement of the blasters. Due to the fact that the A-Wing has slightly pivotable blasters on either side, and is ever so slightly different than the R-22, why don't you have the blasters on the R-22 mounted on the nose of the fighter. Non-pivotable...kind of like a Y-Wing. So, from a distance, or flyby, it might LOOK like an A-Wing, but when it fires, the distance between the blaster bolts would be an indicator to an experienced pilot.

Otherwise, good work!

BTW, do you have a pic of the thing?

I got the new Star Wars: Droids DVD, so I'll look for a screenshot I can make from it.

Here's the pic of the Fighter.

As you can see, it's identical to the later A-Wing. But, according to the Star Wars Official Website (Which is what I use as the basis for "Cannon" in my mind), it's something different that recieved the same nickname.

http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/janntosh/ (Under "Vechicle").

The picture is Copyright LucasFilm Ltd., and was created by Nelvana Studios (YAY! Canadian Content!!!).
