The one time this came up (i was on the receiving end in an ADND game) the baddie was more on about what we HAD on us at the time. He was not concerned with what was at home (or on our ship if we had one etc)...

Well if the BBEG knows exactly how much the PCs have on them I'd say the last three items I suggested would still work. But then GMs certainly don't have to go with my suggestions.
