Ok, I have this idea, and I wanted to bounce it past you guys because you are always good for that sort of thing Very Happy

Last mission the group was charged with the assassination of a imperial remnant warlord general in order to slow down a incoming invasion on a New Republic planet (and also removing him is nice in its own right).

The players killed him by smuggling custom concussion missiles inside their ship, avoid air patrols and such, then blasting the generals manor while he was having a party with some system political types (all bad people).

Their next mission is going to be like this (so far):

Some time after they get back they get another mission. Splicers have been able to track down a secret shipment from the planet the general was assassinated on. Before being disconnected they were able to upload a virus into the vessel so it would drop out of hyperspace at a certain spot.

Their mission would be to be the boarding party in order to take the ship. The ship they use has a cutting device on it so they can cut the hull and board.

The ship would be escorted by some hyperspace able ships (I am thinking Skip ray Blast boats). The group will be backed up by Rancor Squadron (who they have been working with before) to defeat the defenses and board.

So after they board and take control as planned, something hitches. Some of the NPC Republic soldiers yell into the radio something intelligible. They are dispatched to help.

Now heres the twist. The general they took out survived the attack, but he was encased in a suit sort of like Darth Vader (but unfinished) His mind was also messed with, and hes gone crazy.

The group then has to take him down (with NPC backup probably). Before they are able to track him down he hacks into the ships system and sets a silent self destruct. During the fight (and as he is starting to lose) he uses this as his trump card. After this point I am not sure what to do, but I have some time to think of some ideas.

Your critique is welcome! (Ill check over a few days and post when I have a chance)

That sounds pretty cool Smile

Im always hesitant to put the PCs in a fight where they would require npc backup. It makes them feel like im just throwing stuff at them, and if htey cant do it, ill give them help so they can. eventually the PCs could become scrofulous to the plot (had a gm where that happened. he added a few npcs to our party, all of which were at least triple our power level)

Other then that - you can have the darth vader imperial guy demand something from the PCs, or he could want to scar one of them in revenge. You could even have him get away, so the PCs can disable the self destruct with 1.3 seconds to go Wink

It sounds like a great plan but watch out for the wild dice I've had 'boss' type characters die in the first hit due to awesome dice rolls by the players... it's kinda embarrassing when you intend the fight to be dramatic.

What I think would be awesome though if when the guy starts to loose he reveals that the self destruct is on and allows the players to prove it (Check the computer behind you if you will) and then does the typical you only have time to stop the self destruct manually (from the overloading engine room of course) or you can take me down.

The players leg it to the engine room and must fight past auto turrets and droids but they can't take a lot of time doing it while the crazy guy steals their ship leaving them stranded on the ship that they've been shooting up and just cut a massive hole in... Anyway they get to the engine room only to find that the self destruct is indeed on but the actual device that's been set to overload has been removed and the ship could never actually blow up (but the computers all thought it could).

As their ships been stolen they keep this ship (it's better anyway even with the damage) but little do they know it's rife with viruses that mean it can be controlled from afar... someone wants revenge and it's best served cold!

The reason they have backup is because I only have 3 players. 1 is a pilot for their ship, and the other 2 are combat (1 is a good gunner). What I do is let the player who is at a disadvantage (like the pilot when they are on the ground) also control a NPC or 2 for a short time along with their own PC.

It's a good strategy but won't it mean that the pilot will not develp the skills needed to become effective on the ground?
