As far as books are concerned the only essential one on my list is the R&E main rulebook. I actually own almost every single WEG book ever made, including all the Adventure Journals, and keep them in the bookcase next to the gaming table. But, I rarely use them during a game. I use them before the game, in the planning stages. During the game, I have printed out the following very extensive lists and put them in a tabbed binder for quick reference:
Drinks
Foods
Random cargo
HoloMovies
Sports
Games (for gambling)
Businesses
random ship names
random NPC names
random planet names
Any time someone orders a drink at the cantina in my game, they order an actual drink. They watch actual sports. They go to actual movies. They eat actual food. Any random NPC that needs a name on the fly can have a decent one. Any time the PCs ask "what's the nearest habitable planet?" I have a list of plausible sounding names. When they look for work, or a part for their ship, or a fancy new set of clothes, I can tell them actual store names. Franchises they can encounter on other planets.
This level of detail sure does keep the game moving without loss of suspension of disbelief by making up dumb sounding names on the spot. |

Have already used those charts in a game and let me say ewwww!
First damage, was to the septic tank (can't recall which number offhand). Sewage was all throughout one of the rooms, the crew got a not so bright idea, locked themselves in the cabin and tied down all essentials and opened the doors to space. The vacuum pressure began pulling the liquid towards space, sort of in a vortex of splattering sewage. All this did was spread the sewage across the walls and other open corridors instead of vaccing it out to space as they had planned. Needless to say it really livened up the situation, the were scraping frozen poo off the walls til it started to thaw, which led to more illness from a crew than ever I have seen. My players now fear the charts.
When they landed (to whit: belly flopped and skidded to a halt in a hangar from the other damages of that space battle cause their ship was almost fragged) the Coruscanti spaceport they landed in got a not so nice surprise as they came off the ship, the players were smattered with a foul smelling muck and the stench from the ship was cause for it to be quite the scene. The ship was toast needless to say thanks to your charts, but, it did save them from death, the charts were kind enough to leave them alive.
Alexis

LOL Alexis!
The damage charts were created with 2 principles in mind: a) damage should have character and b) the PCs should survive but feel like they came close to dying
So I'd say it was a success in your case, at least in as much as the design principles worked. It sounds like your crew had fun too, which is always the best part. Now they will never forget that ship they had once when the refresher unit exploded. What a great "gamer story" that will make!
Thanks a lot for sharing that with us Alexis! |
