Yeah, it was Steve Perry. I agree that the wordcrafting, as you put it, did seem a different, although I still enjoyed it all right. Later I found his Matador series, which isn't Star Wars, but very enjoyable (to me). I think he may have just been out of his element somewhat when he was writing Shadows of the Empire, although I can't be sure. _________________ Arek | Kage |

Never read Crystal Star, loved all of the "Tales of" books, particularly Bounty Hunters, and I liked "Shadows of the Empire" just fine. My least favorite is probably The Truce at Bakura. I thought it sucked hard. _________________ Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid. |

I agree with the general consensus. Crystal Star was my least favorite. Yes I made it all the way through, and yes I remember some parts of it here and there. No I do not feel the need to talk about any details. |

I don't think The Truce at Bakura was a horrible book, just out of place.
I could have done well in a different story universe but I always felt is was just kinda shoved in where someone could find a spot for it. You can tell none of the other authors found it that interesting because its never revisited.
I still like it better than Crystal Star. I could at least read it without stopping. |

Yeah, I think the fact that it didn't seem to fit was what bugged me the most. I suppose "sucked" is a bit strong, but it annoyed me the most of all the ones I read. I stopped before any of the New Jedi Order or Yuzhaan Vong stuff, though, but what I've heard of those didn't impress me. I would have probably started reading the NJO books, but when I heard they killed Chewie, I decided to avoid them. _________________ Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid. |

ZOMG they killed Chewie?!
Kidding.
Seriously though, I understand what you're saying about Truce at Bakura as well. I enjoyed it as a sci-fi novel, and parts of it I even enjoyed as a Star Wars novel, but I've never been able to get into the "aliener aliens are attacking us and our not-so-alien alien friends" premise. Hence, Truce at Bakura, the Black Fleet Crisis, and what I've read of the NJO stuff just didn't tickle my fancy the way that other books did. I enjoyed those books I suppose, but more as a general sci-fi fan than a Star Wars fan.
I'm glad we're getting some more feedback on this; it's great to see what people disliked as much as what they did like. _________________ Arek | Kage |

I enjoyed The Crystal Star. Right now for me, least favorite would be a toss up between Traitor and the first two books in the BFC. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!

What didn't you like about the first two books in the Black Fleet Crisis? I've not read Traitor yet (I think that was right around the area that I stopped reading the NJO books). _________________ Arek | Kage |

Well, at the time I read them it took me a week to read a SW book (now thanks to the net and other distractions it often takes me longer). Both Before the Storm and Shield of Lies were so extremely boring that not only did it take me a month to read them (again at a time when I read SW books in a week no matter their length), but I also had to force myself to stay awake to read them. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!

Plus, now that we have the prequels out we have MAJOR discontinuity, as the BFC gives names and details about Luke's 'mother,' then we see the whole deal with Padme Amidala in the movies.
WAY uncool... |

Well, I don't think we can fault the books for continuity errors introduced by the prequels, though that does chafe a bit. Without getting off subject, Lucas even broke continuity with the holy trilogy when he killed Padme at the end of Ep3 (remember Leia talking about here real mother with Luke on Endor). So I blame Lucas for authorizing novels and then not giving a rip about what was in them. Lucas set out some strict guidelines for what authors could write about, as I understand it, and then trampled on what had been written before. Either make the restrictions on what authors can write about tighter, or adhere to the continuity that you've enabled.
Anyway, that's a rant for another day (and thread). The whole storyline in the Black Fleet Crisis regarding Luke's mother was both boring and disappointing to me. At the end of the trilogy, I was like, "I read all that stuff about his mom and still got nowhere? Well...crap." _________________ Arek | Kage |

No discontinuity with the prequels. Annakah claimed she could lead Luke to his mother, but it was all a lie just to get him to go with her. The real discontinuity is with RoTJ. Why would Luke and Leia have spent time trying to find their mother after Leia told Luke on Endor that Padme was dead? Before the Storm even claims Leia gave up on finding her years before. They wouldn't have searched at all for a living mother, they already knew she was dead. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!

The discontinuity lies with their mother supposedly being part of the White Current. Were that the case, she could certainly have held her own against Anakin's little temper tantrum there, and could have, at the very least, whisked her infants to safety... |

No, again, there is no discontinuity with the prequels. Annakah LIED to Luke. She told Luke she knew where to find his mother to get him to go with her. Luke didn't learn this until Tyrant's Test. In that novel he learned Annakah knew absolutely nothing about his mother, learned that her claims she'd been a part of the White Current were just a part of the greater lie to get him to escort her on her journey. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!

Great.
Now I'm gonna have to go back and re-re-re-read it again.
