"This ship handles really sluggishly it's almost as if it's much heavier than it should be, but our scanners can't detect anything... Oh by the way the ship used to belong to a spice smuggler it was repossesed and sold by his Hutt employer when he realized a lot of his merchandise was never reaching it's destination" |

I think it is in Platt's Smugglers Guide or Stock Ships.
IIRC, You get odd smells, the access ramp unable to go down all the way without kicking it in the right spot, ect.
Personally, I figure a GM and the Player should get together to figure out what is happening with the ship. Problems with the equipment... Missing Parts... Strange Jury Rigging... Odd Programming that can't be figured out, but is required according to the Hyperdrive's limited AI... Just what the HECK that thing is that's LIVING in the Ashtray of the Cockpit, and what it's saying... The Hatch that always swings down and smacks the Pilot on the back of the head whenever he walks under it... Ect. ect. ect.
Gives the ship... Character.
Honestly, I consider the Millenium Falcon one of the main Characters. It's just that the poor girl doesn't get to be added in the credits.
And, I've made alot of Freighter Bums... But the ship I remember most is the "Straight Arrow", mainly for all it's faults, it still started when I needed her to, and she always got me through the Fights. But she was a used, abused freighter... Her ramp never came down right, she had graffiti all over the place, she was dirty, unkempt, beat up, and the only entertainment we had was a copy of "Hot Hutts" (A porno mag) until I cleaned up, and replaced the equipment.
The "Lager" tried to replace her... But she's the one I still think of. |

Don't forget the occasional mint freighter with an unusual sale clause.
"This freighter was owned by a bit of a recluse he was a contractor to a cargo firm and spent all of his time and money upgrading the freighter it now out performs all 'stock freighters' of it's design by about 50%... Unfortunately we think he developed space psychosis from all his time alone and as such he left the frieghter to the family of mynocks which infest the hull when he died... technically you'd be their tennants. The big one is called bitey"
"Don't worry he installed a secondary engine to supply power to the mynocks so they won't effect the freighter's performance" |

Used Capital Ships for sale?
Gotta be a good reason for it! Aside from the Medium and Heavy Freighters, they don't go on the market that often, and are usually too expensive for an individual to buy. Companies and Planets, however...
As for their conditions... It would depend on the reason for the sale. If the Planet/Company is upgrading, and doesn't want to spend the resources on the old Capital, then it's probably in good condition. Might need a bit more maintence than a New Ship, but that's about it.
If it's because they've gone belly-up, then it's probably less so. Dirt on the floors, with the middle clean only because that's where everyone walks. Exposed replaced wiring that is unlabeled. Nonstandard replacement parts that "Sorta" work. Improperly installed software and hardware upgrades that cause the systems to barely work and give fuzzy pictures on the Holograms and viewscreens. And whatever else you want to think up.
Finally, there's the "So Old We Can't Use It Any Longer" ships. Think the US Sub from "U-571" (Gotta be something in the bloody movie to use. It certainly isn't accurate in any other way. The Operation depicted was a BRITISH operation!!! Sorry folks, I just hate "The US won WWI and WWII all by themselves" movies.). These would be Pre-Clone Wars or Earily Clone Wars ships (With the exception of Dreadnaughts, which are, surprisingly, still in their prime, aside from their speed and crew requirements. Good ships those!).
Hope that helps. |

Best way to 'acquire' capital ships is to capture them. Probably easier than buying them... Maybe... Sorta... Kinda...
When one group of mine had gotten powerful enough, we had a nice little space battle for the Crown of her homeworld (not a Naboo thing; she was a royal in exile).
Here were the sides:
The usurper to VanGellis' throne was her uncle, the Dark Jedi Naegor.
The main battle line of the Alcaldean fleet:
3 Victory II Star Destroyers
2 Strike Cruisers
9 squadrons of TIE Fighters (108 ships)
1 squadron of TIE Interceptors (12 ships)
The "reserves" held on the other side of Gella IV for Naegor:
2 Imperial Star Destroyers
4 Strike Cruisers
10 squadrons of TIE Fighters (120 ships)
4 squadrons of TIE Interceptors (48 ships)
Total opposing Force:
5 large capital ships
6 Cruisers
228 regular TIEs
60 TIE Interceptors
The "Good guys" of Melanie VanGellis and her Alliance supporters
The main battle line of the true ruler of Gella IV:
Melanie's DP-X Nova ship (command ship)
3 Assault Frigates
3 Gamma Assault Shuttles
1 Carrier Cruiser
4 squadrons of X-wings (48 ships)
3 squadrons of Y-wings (36 ships)
2 squadrons of A-wings (24 ships)
The Alliance "2nd wave" arriving 30 minutes after the start of battle:
5 Escort Frigates
8 Corellian Corvettes
8 Gunships
2 Carrier Cruisers
8 squadrons of X-wings (96 ships)
3 squadrons of Y-wings (36 ships)
3 squadrons of A-wings (36 ships)
2 squadrons of B-wings (24 ships)
Total "Good Guy" forces:
3 Carrier cruisers
8 Frigates
8 Corvettes
8 Gunships
4 Shuttles
144 X-wings
72 Y-wings
60 A-wings
24 B-wings
It was quite a battle...
Good guys attack bad guys. Bad guy reserves "come out of nowhere" (although honestly, hasn't anyone ever heard about scanning both sides of the planet before?) and start mincing the good guys. Things look desparate when all of a sudden, MORE GOOD GUYS!
Bam, bam, bam! And the next thing you know, Bernas is fighting the Dark Jedi on the surface of the planet, Melanie is restored as Queen, and she has quite a nice new Navy to augment what she got back from Naegor's defeated forces.
Her current fleet stands as follows:
Melanie's DP-X Nova ship (command ship)
1 Imperial Star Destroyer II
2 Imperial Strike Cruisers
1 Assault Frigate
1 Escort Frigate
2 Corellian Corvettes
4 Corellian Gunships
1 Carrier Cruiser
24 X-wings
24 Y-wings
12 A-wings
4 B-wings
36 TIE Fighters
All other ships were a) sent back to the Alliance High Command b) destroyed and/or too damaged and scuttled for parts or c) escaped to Imperial space.
It was a really cool adventure. _________________ "Let your anger be like a monkey in a pinata"
