That is my general opinion. But my players always say "whats a star wars setting without jedi." and they are right... to a point.

Yup, Star Wars games can run quite nicely without ever encountering a single Force User, PC or NPC. While the Force is intrinsically part of the setting, it doesn't have to lift its head and be seen Wink

This all depends on the personal opinions and attitudes of different gaming groups. Usually when one of my groups wants to do Star Wars, people want to be Jedi or companions of Jedi.

But let's face it, if we're going to be running our games strictly according to cannon, we probably wouldn't be running our games at all. In all of the well run games I've played, someone else winds up taking down Darth Vader, stealing the plans to the Death Star, giving Bastila a hand in her fight with Revan, or any of the other things we would love to be a part of within Star Wars.

Why not bend the rules of how often Jedi teachers appear so long as there are good in-game plot reasons, and it doesn't stretch the players' suspension of disbelief too far. (And it's odd that we'd have to talk too much about suspension of disbelief in a universe where a little green muppet moves an X-Wing with his mind. ) Smile

I've played in games with Jedi characters occasionally, but the vast majority of times there haven't been any in sight. With us it's usually all about the smuggling and guerilla warfare.

I guess mileage does vary, we usually don't bump into main characters from the movies. We've touched upon them subtly, like the adventure where we stole, and then sold to the Rebellion the technology to let Luke eventually get his human-looking cyberhand, but that's about the extent of it. A few of my characters have had "Drinking buddies with Han" written on their character sheets, but he never showed up. We figure it's all about the players' characters being the heroes, and it's a big galaxy, so there's plenty of room to play around without bumping up against the movie plots too badly.

I can believe in the green puppet way better than I can believe that a whiny little schmuck like prequel Anakin can turn into terror-of-the-galaxy Darth Vader. Wink

Yeah, we only ran into movie characters a year or so ago in an Imperial game set during ANH and into ESB... but that game was a little bit of a joke too. We saved the Death Star (destroying Yaving IV, along with Leia and C-3PO), had Vader as a personal nemesis and killed Luke accidentally... interacted with the Emperor and Tarkin... yeah, but other than that game, main character didn't happen.

It's a big galaxy and timeline.

Generaly I'm sucker for puppets and anamatronics. I would rather have a few robots or puppets then CGI in most cases. Theres something a bit more natural to the way Non CGI look and move.

I like the holocron a little bit better then the teacher. atleast during empire reign there are few adequate teachers left. Either get someone who knows just a little more then the character does. Giving them a new power to play with but little more. Or use a holocron with a sort of puzzle forcing the character to apply knowledge learned or follow clues to unlock newer powers. That way you can have a plot device that doesn't always have to sidetrack the players and you can spoon feed those powers you think will give the player support without making them unstoppable.

Same here. I have had many a good game of SW without a single PC jedi. Yes we had encounters with NPC jedi (mostly darksiders) but not having one in the party did not diminish it any.

Same here. Jedi were extremely rare in our games, and we never missed them. What's Star Wars without Jedi? Pretty close to Ep4, I think. In that film, the whole Jedi thing is little less than scenery. Luke does nothing "Jedi-ish", except delfecting couple remote blasts, and OB1 and Vader's antiques are more like background fluff, that doesn't really affect the story very much.

I never understood people's need to have Jedi in a SW campaign. From my experience, it's usually people who are not very familiar with Star Wars that can't see an interest in playing anything other than a Jedi in the SWRPG.

I've played Jedi and non-Jedi, and I've had fun both ways. But I really understand the draw in my gaming groups. It's because people had fallen in love with the space-opera idea of a mystical knight. The Jedi are also the most visible part of the Star Wars Saga. And that might be part of your point when it comes to people who aren't as familiar with Star Wars wanting to play Jedi. Some of the people had never read so much as Zahn's books, but they had seen the movies twenty dozen times.

Take the most basic element of roleplaying, and it's imagination play. If you look at the toy licenses, and you still see a whole lot more lightsabers than blasters on the shelves. Kids are dressing up for Halloween, and I see a lot of Jedi costumes, and a lot fewer Fett and Solo costumes. People just think Jedi are cool.

I'm not advocating, mind you, I'm just explaining.

Fett, best character ever.... even though he had like three lines in The Empire Strikes Back! I've always been partial to Rogues and Bounty Hunters, just not the Dog the Bounty Hunter Kind...more the old west Bounty Hunter type!
