Does anyone remember if X-wings (or any other non-capital ship craft) can communicate with each other while in hyperspace? It'd require them to have a hypercomm, I believe. I seem to remember Rogue Squadron talking amongst themselves while in hyperspace once, but I can't remember exactly. _________________ Arek | Kage |

I remember quite clearly from a number of novels and even games that one of the key problems with hyperspace is that it's IMPOSSIBLE to communicate with anything outside the ship in the middle of a hyper-jump. A hypercomm uses hyperspace to send messages, but these can't originate in hyperspace, nor be directed at a ship in hyperspace. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Yeah, I'm with Gry on that one. No communication with ships actually IN hyperspace. |

It's another of the reasons that ships take a series of jumps to a target.
They stop, re-orient themselves, check e-mail, maintence, then off again. |

And one of the reasons co-ordinated mass hyper jumps are hard as heck to put together. All those ships being co-ordinated with no comms during the jump. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Also, I remember in the "Rebellion" video game, there was an interesting aspect to this. If you sent a fleet to attack a planet that was days away, you could not recall it to aid you anywhere else until it had arrived at its destination point. That posed some interesting strategical issues, which I remember being touched upon by a few novels. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Gonna have to check one of the Corellian trilogy on this one. But I seem to recall that there was something about doing something while in hyperspace concerning communications, but only with specialized gear and is cost a lot to be able to do it even with that gear. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!

Yeah, it did! I always did hate that part about that game, but that's one of the sources I'm referring to when I talk about experiencing that particular issue.
Great game, though. |

As I'm at work, I can't look it up, but I seem to recall that the Imperial Sourcebook says that the Old Republic had a galaxy wide internet analog called the Holonet, which the Empire pretty much shut down, except for the use of it's own agencies. The impression I got was that the New Republic opened it up again, but that games set during the Rebellion era have no way for characters to directly communicate across star systems, only within individual systems. Slicers can hack into it at times, of course, but most communications seemed to go by couriers between systems.
This is what I found on Wookieepedia, which seems to agree with what I recall from the WEG book, whichever one it is:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/HoloNet
Unfortunately, the Wookieepedia entry doesn't mention whether it works while travelling in hyperspace, maybe the Imperial Sourcebook does. I don't think it does, but I can't recall exactly. _________________ Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid. |

The Holonet uses Hyperspace Transcievers to send and recieve information, like meeting points at Internet Trunks.
IIRC, however, the equipment for it is the size of a satelite, and probably couldn't fit in anything smaller than a SSD. There might be some experimental equipment that can fit in something smaller, but we know what that means.

I loved that game!!! I always wanted them to make a Rebellion 2
But yes, it was touched on in novels, and in the game
Im pretty sure holonet does not work in hyperspace either, because i know ships come out then make the call. _________________ The Vong have Arrived
