I agree with your idea. I had similar problems. I had 4 friends in 6th grade. But because i was a star wars geek, i have made alot fo friends. I went from having 4 friends in 6th grade, to having alot more now. the reason alot of those people are my friends, is becuase one of my friends from beofre told me about Star Wars mini's. Went to the local gamestore and it turned out they ran a star wars RPG. Because of that i started playing D&D. I have made alot of friends over these past 4 years, all becuase of playing the Star Wars RPG. I say go for it. Overall it helps with social skills. I mean you met interesting and great people. But there are downsides. I have to say my downside is i met alot of great people but one horrible person.
OVerall, it helps. I am making alot of friends in school now because of this. Better then playing sports in ym opnion becuase that isn't communicating, that's hitting things. _________________ I maybe be a duro with an eye patch, but I can sure AS HELL FLY A SHIP!!!! |

And, I have learned SO MUCH from gaming! I could never even list all the things I've learned. Rolling dice and adding up the bonuses/penalties ect really improve your math skills because you do it quickly and on the fly. Figuring out game rules and the usual charts and tables helps you with cognitive ability. During gaming, figuring out the best solution to whatever challenges your character faces improves your problem solving skills, and it actually helps you make tough decisions in your real life when you can relate them to a game situation. Plus I've learned about all kinds of domesticated animals, wild animals, the weather, climates, geography, history, ecology, ballistics, measurments and a list so long it would bore the pants off of you. Plus you also learn more philosophic things like the value of life, the spirit of adventure, the worth of a person not being decided by what they look like or what language they speak or what religion they practice. Man there is so much to learn in the world, and gaming provides a FUN way to learn it!

Agreed. To me the thiings gaming helps out are
1) Problem solving skills, whether negotiations, or simply figuring out what the best course of actions are.
2) People skills. Knowing how to interact with other PCs as well as npcs.
3) Social skills. Speech!!!
4) Group skills. Team work, leadership, they all get hit
5) Math. Whether it is adding your die roll up or figuring out how much to pay for X..
Then there are the non learning bonuses...
1) Keeps you mentally active. Lots of kids these days with their pc and console games, do not use their mind as much as they should. RPGs on the other hand engage your mind constantly.
2) Keeps them out of trouble. If they are over at a friends place gaming (or better yet your house), you KNOW they won't be getting into drugs, drinking etc. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Heh.. one of my gaming crew is a guy who is the younger brother of a friend who I used to game with... we started him off at somewhere in the neighborhood of like 6 or 7. He didn't have to know how to read, but we made sure he had to know how to add his dice together to play... _________________ "Love like you will die tomorrow. I have always sucked at dice maths... it's a running joke in my group.
Which is odd because back in school (before I started roleplaying) I was good at maths _________________ Don't waste money on expensive binoculars.

The only problem with it is if you are gaming with people you don't know personnally. I game at a local Store and things have gotten messy in the past... and the present... and i am sure they will again in the future. _________________ I maybe be a duro with an eye patch, but I can sure AS HELL FLY A SHIP!!!! |

I have to say its good to support your younger gamers. We will always need a new generation to keep the games a going . I started GM'ing when I was 12 id almost say gaming for me was in the blood. I probably wouldn't have even gotten into gaming if it wasn't for stories from my dad about his days of D&D. Thus the torch is passed.... _________________ Nothing smells worse then burnt Wookie hair. |

I agree with every positive thing I read in this thread.
Now my son has stopped trying to eat dice, I'm getting him to add up the numbers to prepare him for what is to come.
Back to the OP:
Any ideas on rules mods for a game with a young 'un?
For example:
Damage Levels
Stunned 1 round
Stunned 2 rounds
Wounded
Defeated
Not realistic, but it gets the game moving. I'd also probably explain in moviemaking terms that the "actor" playing the defeated NPC gets up after the camera moves away from him.
Also how do we explain to them the usage of con and gambling? Personally I'd do away with gambling altogether and use the word trick to replace con, and explain against telling lies in the real world. Or should I also do away with con? _________________ The Enteague Sector | Cracken's Collection of Crackpots

Con is IMO more than just 'we lie'... it is also a lie detector.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Con is also used in disguise so trick works pretty well. In fact making a disguise might be a 'safe' way to introduce a child to the con concept. _________________ Don't waste money on expensive binoculars.
