I would say 2 yrs from the start of the purge to sightings of executors/inquisitors... this gives the baddies time to train them and ensure their loyalty.

True. But, then you just have to have a creative GM to set things right with different personalities at the helm, or, accept that there is now an alternate timeline and change events as they come, which itself can make an amazing campaign.

Ankhanu has a good point here; if your players are up to it, and if you are up to it as a GM, you might sometime consider running a campaign that actually does change the timeline/continuity. I believe they're referred to as Infinities campaigns.

I have a friend who ran one such campaign. In that timeline Vader successfully turned Luke. They both teamed up and opposed the Emperor, who promoted Mara Jade from Emperor's Hand to his new full-fledged Sith apprentice. The two factions basically divvied up the Imperial assets and are waging a huge war against one another, and the Rebellion is sitting there, watching the war kinda like a tennis match where your head goes back and forth as you track the ball. At this point both Imperial factions are also basically ignoring the Rebellion.

I'm currently in a game (one of the PbP games below) where Luke was turned and the Rebellion all but crushed. We're basically back to square one (or maybe 1.5) because we're scattered again, most of the leaders were killed, but there are some who still remember the height of the Rebellion and are still determined to see/bring about the fall of the Empire.

You can have great fun with this concept, provided you and your players are up for changing things completely. This also eliminates most timeline arguments; the only possible ones that might hold water would be timeline references to the development of different technologies. Otherwise you have a blank page.

I am a big fan of games that do allow pc's to cahnge things, they are heroes and theri actions should influence things, sometimes on a small scale but every once in a blue moon it should be galaxy changing.

I've played in eras of Ep4, Ep5, and Ep1. I really enjoy any era based off of the orignal series. My latest adventure takes place near the begining of Ep6 and hopefully will continue on into the post movie era. Not only do I have alot of fun in this time period, but most of my source matterial is applicable to this time. Plus everybody loves to shoot at the boys in white!

Currently I am running a campaign set a year after ESB. I try not to have my players directly involved with the war against the empire, I prefer to run a campaign that paralels the movies. Although I have just started my current campaign, I am allowing one player to pick up a character from my prievious campaign. Inwhich that character was actually In Cloud City when Lando made his famous intercom cry out to the citizens to abandon the city. It was a fantastic tool to cause dramatic ugency in the players. At the time they we assiting a Lost prince to regain the throne of his homeworld, and they were in the middle of a negotiation with rival faction to gain an ancient artifact that would prove the princes clain to the throne. This negotiation was taking place in a posh hotel in the upper levels of Cloud City... The negotiations were going slow and Lando's Announcement was the perfect thing to motivate a great fire fight.

This fight ended with a heroic jump of the players from the blown out window of the hotel to their Ship's extended landing ramp. All this at three thousand feet above the surface of Cloud city, while their ship was being hailed by a near by TIE fighter that was demanding they land. The TIE fighter didnt last much longer. Very Happy Then a great little ship to ship combat as they escaped from the Bespin system.

During this current campaign I plan to have them on board the second Death Star as it is attacked by the rebels... I have not worked out all the details yet... But it should make an exciting conclusion.

I say using the events of the movies makes for great after stories for the players. It really gives them a feeling that they were there and puts a little perspective on the fact that the exploits of Luke, Leia, Han and Vader aren't the only things that ever happend in the SW universe.

I did a similar thing with my recently ended campaign, set between ANH and ESB. It was mainly a smuggling/arms dealer campaign, and while we didn't take part in any of the scenes or locations of the movies, we touched upon events in various ways. For instance, we stole, and subsequently sold to the Rebellion, the technology which later enabled Luke to get a human looking replacement limb. I like adding in those minor touches of background.
