"I think those tracks might be the answer," Roth observes. "Determine how recent they are and we might then know how best to deploy."

Roth gets out of the speeder and inspects the foot trails. Bending down closely, he inspects the trampled blades of grass. The thing that really stands out to him is that a few of the trails head away from the river while a few head towards it. But he can't get an idea how long ago the trails were made, or whether the ones heading away from the river are newer than the ones heading towards it. Either one could have been made minutes before the group arrived or several hours ago.

Sniffing the trails in the grass, Daevon picks up two smells that don't seem naturally occuring. The first is a faint metallic smell, while the second, stronger, smell is more of an oily smell. Kinda like a lubricant oil. The smell of the grass almost makes it impossible to tell which set of tracks has the stronger smell, but Daevon thinks it's the tracks that appear to be heading towards the river.

Moving over to the river bank as Roth continues to examine the grass, Daevon sniffs the faint footprints he spotted. Though theres a smell of dirt around them, the metalic and oily smells are definately much stronger in the foot prints heading into the ford than those coming out of it. It's still difficult to say how long ago the footsteps were made, but from the smells he could guess they probably were made while Syllri was still attending to Roth's wound, maybe a little before.

Looking back he sees Sigfried and Syllri joining Roth in examining the grass. Only Syllri cast an occasional glance his way while the other two pay more attention to examining the grass and don't even consider the river.

Roth sinks into deeper concentration in the Force, using it to aid his search...

Bringing the Force to bear in his investigation of the tracks, Roth determines that the trampled grass in the foot trails leading away from the river seems a little dry, and thus maybe a little deader, than those leading to the river.

"Well my nose says they came into the river, so they have either travelled upstream or downstream, in the river. Common trick by prey to lose the predator."

Daevon looks at the river bed to get an idea as to which way they travelled. He loos for lichen that has been scratched by travel, or a rock that has been overturned, scuff marks or branches over hanging that have been damaged.

Daevon searches along the river for more signs of passage. Finding none, he wads out a little way into the ford. A few of the stones look to have been recently moved from where they once rested on the river bed. In fact it looks as if whoever disturbed them may have turned and headed downstream. But following them, Daevon finds where the being clearly stumbled and left some pretty deep footprints that are being filled in. They appear to be turning back towards the ford and the other side of the river, though they could be made to mislead pursuit.

Roth looks to Daevon, figuring the Covallon to be a better tracker than himself. "What are you finding, Daevon?" he asks, quickly relaying his own findings so they can compare notes.

"Sometimes one must become many in order to get a job done. Perhaps we should split up, at least until we find more tracks."
