Nickname them as you would people.
Some folks are happy with the cold designation given by the company, some have acronyms that mean something. Whenever you modify the droid, you should also change the designation, to show that it's no longer stock (Even if it's just to put a "*" at the end.).
But, for three droids, if you're a Statesider, then all you need to do is paint them different colours, and call them by thier colours. "Red", "White", "Blue".
If you're from not from the USA (And good for you, then!), try to substitute your country colours. "Black", "Green", and "Gold" for Jamaica for example.
Or, for another idea, then "Leaf" "Harp" and "Lion" with the painted item at the top of the dome.
Or you can name them off of your favorite Micro-Gravity, 3-D Curling Team!!! |

For me, a weird name in Star Wars is a regular name for us. Doug, Sam, Joe, Tim, etc. I always manage to come up with something, different.
What names have been the funniest or created the most humor in the game? For me, I think it was Grubias. _________________ "I don't know about angels, but it's fear that gives men wings." -Max Payne

Any nicknames that you guys come up with for yourselves? My occasional sinister GMing and major in college has earned me the title of "Darth Calculus." (I'm working on becoming a math teacher. Cue the lightning and dramatic music anytime now.) _________________ wookies+lightsabers=bad day

Well my characters astromech Droid in one campaign was named R6-D6.
A homage to the best SW system. _________________ "My schooling not only failed to teach me what it professed to be teaching, but prevented me from being educated to an extent which infuriates me when I think of all I might have learned at home by myself." - George Bernard Shaw |

A friend of mine had a driod that he called "DV8" Then there are the classic names like "Whistler" (Corran Horn's R-unit) And "Mynock" (Wedge Antilles') so named because it drains more power from his X-wing then any other astromech. _________________ "I take orders from just one person: Me!"

Actually "Mynock" was so named because of it's tendency to shriek in dangerous situatuions. The power drain thing was what Wedge suspected but turned out to be untrue.
After Wedge tired of the droids constant shrieking he had it upgraded memory wipped and renamed. It's upgrade gave it the serrial number that started with G8 so he called it Gate...
Imaginitive huh? |

Most of the droids have names that sound like their designations. Eevee. (E-V), Artoo, Threepio, etc. Anyone use HAL yet? _________________ "I don't know about angels, but it's fear that gives men wings." -Max Payne

“What are you doing Rathe…er…um…Dave.?”
Not yet, I don't think it would go over too well in my group. We would probably beat the whole 2001 thing to death. _________________ "My schooling not only failed to teach me what it professed to be teaching, but prevented me from being educated to an extent which infuriates me when I think of all I might have learned at home by myself." - George Bernard Shaw |

I've noticed that quite a few human have normal first names but their family name is what sets them apart in SW 8) _________________ Tuco: "But if you miss you had better miss very well. Whoever double-crosses me and leaves me alive, he understands nothing about Tuco."

I would say, with some discretion, that most names are okay. Stay away from obvious Earth names. _________________ "I don't know about angels, but it's fear that gives men wings." -Max Payne

That’s excellent!
For earth names, I might let some slide (like Luke) but I tell my player to try to Star Wars it up a bit. Instead of being named Josh, something like “Jozz” might have a bit more of that Star Wars feel. The difference is minimal (phonetically), but it has the element of weirdness that makes it more…epic. _________________ "My schooling not only failed to teach me what it professed to be teaching, but prevented me from being educated to an extent which infuriates me when I think of all I might have learned at home by myself." - George Bernard Shaw |
