I was curious, what was the price for upgrading droids. Well more specifically the official rules for upgrading droids. The rules in the droid stats book seem very very cheap.

It's fairly cheap, depending on what you want to do. It's quite expensive as you move away from programming a droid to do anything outside of it's Type's area of design though. AS for the rules, there are charts based on the droid's Degree classification, amount to increase, and all the like. Not sure it'd be kosher to print it here... It's in Cynabar's Fantastic Technology: Droids.

It can be cheep to upgrade droids but as Ankhanu points out it depends on the class. I used to have a file that broke down the costs somewhere but I seem to have lost it.

Also the process should be considerably increased for any custom droids as the standard parts won't always work.

Ya, they seem cheap, when you realize that that's the retail price for the common stuff.

Most of the stuff PCs will want will have to be custom made, which drives the price up up *UP*!

I agree. It may be a very expensive to create an universal droid. Also - installation time is very long for skills that not match to droid type.
Foe example installation of 1D dodge for 1st degree droid costs 375, is very difficult task and takes 72 hours of work (I think it would be about 1000 credits of installation costs, only the best specialists can beat very difficult)!

The issue is when one of the players is a verpine with 5D technical, 2D droid repair/programming and a workshop in the player's freighters.

That gives the verpine a dicepool of nine dice before character points and they have a lot of time in hyperspace jumps to tinker.

Still I suppose if the players want to create a character like that then perhaps they should be able to create droid armies.

Don't forget how expensive that would cost and would bring alot of negative attention to the party...

Not to mention space.

Oh, and if they buy retail software, then you start getting into Digital Rights Management, which will ensure that the software will only install on *ONE* droid!

Wouldn't that only work if the droids were networked somehow? Besides with 9D they can probably write the software themselves.

Do you mean the cost of the workshop or the droid parts? Either way after the large initial costs the party can suppliment their income by selling droids

The cost of the parts and new droids and such would begin to mount yes. If you were to build a droid army or battle droids, that would garner alot of negative attention. It would be expensive to start out but yea, it would begin to supplement itself with time.

A few bodyguards might not grab peoples attention but a good sized army would need to be kept somewhere not to mention that droids are not well liked by most.

Ah yes, I tend to exaggerate for comedic purposes, when I said army I only really meant between 5-10 droids after that it just starts to get logistical.

And no matter how many dice you've got in intimidation the catch phrase/battle cry

"Don't make me get logistical on you."

Is unlikely to strike fear into the hearts of sapients

My players have lot of droids (they have capital ship and droids are significant part of crew). I think there's about 40 of them (I think 18 MSE-6, but all rest is more complex). I decided that they need two supervisor droids (with command: droids and droid repair skills) plus a large droid bay with ~30000 credits worth parts.
More droids, more suprvising/maintenance costs.

Nope. They need (IIRC) an advanced skill to write the software themselves..

Really? I thought droid programming would cover the creation of droid programming. What's the skill?

[tangent]I know advanced skills start out at one dice when you get them so does that mean it only costs two character points for them until you get over two dice?[/tangent]
