I'm alright, thanks for the concern. I don't think anybody I knew died on that crash. Nevertheless, it's quite a tragedy for everybody. Not to mention the growing fear and dismay at our aviation's chaotic state. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Good to know you're ok dude. I just read about it after seeing Shaun's post. The article I read said that the pilots have to put down perfectly within the first 1,000 feet of runway or they're flagged to pass on and circle back for another try. That is just not right for a commercial airport.
I'm sorry for the loss of those folks. Good to know you and yours are alright though. _________________ Check out some of my games at DriveThruRPG!

Not only is it the largest and busiest airport in latin america, it also doesn't have a runway long enoungh for wet landing, has been closed something like 12 times this year due to flooding, and the new runway surface doesn't have the groovs required to help water run off. The head of the airport is now facing criminal charges.
Good to hear you're alright Gry. _________________ "I take orders from just one person: Me!"

What I didn't get from an AP article I saw this afternoon was that the plane was rerouted to a different airport because it was coming in at a bad angle. Was I completely missing something and this was a different plane being rerouted, or was this the same one that crashed?
Sorry for being a complete idiot on this one, Gry. And it is good to hear your alright. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!

I din't hear anything about the plane being rerouted, Hellcat. As far as I can gather it was clear to land alright. The airport released some footage from the cameras around the runway, and what they show is quite puzzling. The airplane doesn't seem to be trying to break at all. It doesn't look, as initially suspected, like the plane is skidding on the runway, unable to stop due to the wet pavement and short runway. It actually speeds rights through the runway. I can only imagine it was trying to take off again, but I can't imagine why it failed to do so (it's a very common maneuver), and why it veered to the left to crash on that building. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Ok, now that is bizarre. Why would the pilots do such a thing? I mean, if it was indeed the pilots themselves and not a hugely bizarre mechanical failure that swapped throttle for brake then I just can't picture one of the pilots accelerating the plane by themselves without the other trying to stop them. And what about the rest of the flight crew, could they have done anything from their stations to stop them? Don't know enough about a passenger jet's bridge, but I believe it's got a flight crew of at least three. Pilot, co-pilot, and flight engineer (maybe two flight engineers). Pilot and co-pilot are probably the only ones with access to throttle and brakes.
Just plain bizarre. _________________ FLUFFY for President!!!!
