If you have a space transport that has a crew requirement of two (or more) and does not list a skeleton crew, I assume that you need two pilots in order to fly it.

Suppose once again that there is a ship that has a crew listing of something like

Crew: 2.

This is from the Millenium Falcon from the Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook page 231. The ship needs two pilots, but what are each one doing? If, for example, Han and Chewie are navigating an asteroid field, but no one is using command to coordinate them. What do Han and Chewie do specifically. Do they both roll their space transport skills? Is Chewie just there to look pretty and only Han has to use his space transport skill?

Can Han make space transport skill checks while Chewie is doing something else like operating the sensors and not actually piloting? Or does this incur some sort of penalty?

the way i interpret it is that one person is flying and making all the rolls, the other is using the scanners/shields/auxiliary systems, and shouting out help to the pilot

"Watch out for the asteroid on the left. DIVE!" and such

I would agree with Vong. I would think that a full crew would be what the ship would require to operate at maximum capacity. With a full crew all the systems would be able to be operated simultaneously. In my opinion it only ever takes one person to pilot a ship, but the bigger the ship the more things have to be done than just piloting hence the need for larger crews. Ships like the Falcon can be piloted by one person, but the weapons, deflectors, sensors, life support, and other various systems would not be things the pilot alone could change. With the full crew of two, while it would be difficult, would allow for all the systems to be used at once. The most effective crew would probably include six persons, four in the cockpit and one in each of the quad turrets. This is just based on the look of the ship in the OT and not at all based on any gaming books, so it may be completely wrong according to the rules, Very Happy

Well, some ships list a skeleton crew to pilot it, and a penalty for that... such as the HT-2200s, with a crew of 2 or 1/+10.. Meaning 2 can pilot it at no penalty (one makes the rolls, the other is assisting, and iirc you don't need a command roll to get someone to assist you)... Or 1 person can pilot it at +10 to his diff number.

exactly, the pilot will have to tweak all those systems, monitor the sensors, keep an eye on engine power and all that as well as pilot.

That is how we always played it, but it amazes me how many little house rules that we had. After seven years, I find it hard to remember what is a house rule and what is a rule as writen. Thank you.

One more question. What doe the crew rating on the Wild Karrde in the Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook (page 232) mean?

It says

Crew: 2:8

I have never seen the colon used like this in a crew setting.

That's a darned good question.

Considering the stock Action VI Transport has "Crew: 10, skeleton: 6/+10", the best meaning I could make of this would be "Crew: 8, skeleton: 2/+10", though that requires a big tweak.

That's why I'm always confused when people complain about typos in fan-made sourcebooks. It seems to me that the goal is to have fewer typos than WEG. Smile

Heh... When I get something free I'm just happy to be getting it. When I have to actually shell out cash, THAT'S when I want it to be perfect!

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. Does the Heir to the Empire SB have that same typo, or are the legit stats in there?

I found a stat site that had it listed as
Crew 2
Gunners 8

That at least makes some sense.

The 3 turbolasers the Wild Karrde sports don't have any crew listed, and I don't see why you'd have 8 people manning 3 turbolasers, unless it had listed "Crew: 2(1), 3 (2)".

Supposing the 2 crew; 8 gunners scenario, what modifications would have been made to remove the need for 8 crew members? Or is crew for the Action VI Transport including gunners?
