Recently I've adopted this rule which seems to work great:
I've simply equated the costs of items in credits in game to the cost of an appropriate analogy in the real world in dollars. Ships for this purpose equate to automotive vehicles of the same type.
For instance,
A comlink costs about the same as a walkie talkie. A brand new light transport ship costs about the same as a brand new pickup truck. A bulk freighter costs the same as a 18 wheeler, and a warship costs the same as a tank. Of course, any warship bigger than a corvette is not for sale to individuals, only governments. A blaster costs the same as a handgun, and body armor is the same price and quality per level of protection as real body armor, it just has a star warsy name. Ect ect
This rule seems to really make it easy for the non star wars fanatics in my gaming group know instantly about how much something should cost, if they are being swindled, and how rich they are.
