I am always making new characters, and they are all kind of likely to die in a nasty way... Do you guys have any advice on how to make the characters? I try to make sure they can stay alive until they get good at doing other things, but then I'm just stiing there not dieing so that kind of sucks. Once again the Master Of Games is called upon to help his fellow gamer.
My advice, if you are starting with the 7/5 rule, put the "D" into survival skills, dodge, brawling parry, blaster, melee parry if you use melee weapons, and whatever you have left put into skills suiting your character's type. That way you have the best chance to survive. Also, not jumping into combat recklessly is a good idea. Even the book warns how combat is dangerous. _________________ "I don't know about angels, but it's fear that gives men wings." -Max Payne

Crunch Guide To Sur... To Sur... To Stay Living.
By: Crunch.
Use cover. Cover not get hurt when hit by Blaster.
Dodge away from where blaster shoots.
Grenades go off, be somewhere else when they do.
Do not annoy Rodians with big guns.
Do *NOT* mess with my bunny.
The End. |

Rathe's right, if you're doing the 7/5, make sure your character can survive combat with basic opponents... although, when you do that and your character still dies, I'd talk to the GM and make sure he knows that he's putting challanges that are a little "too" great for your character and you need something a little easier to do

That's hilarious dude... but good points in there... although a little over simplified which makes sense for your character
let me make a few of my own points along that line:
Use Cover - Cover can always be useful... especially full cover, because they technically can't shoot at you when you have full cover, and it hides you from sight so you can relocate yourself
Dodge - you should ALWAYS try to dodge... and it's better to use character points to avoid getting hit in the first place then to use them to soak damage... unless you've got uber armor/str
grenades - falls under the ALWAYS dodging rule
Rodians - I've never actually had a rodian pick a fight with me... I prefer my next rule...
Barbels - Don't shoot the barbel... you'll only make him angry... _________________ "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times... before the Empire. "

The first rule in and firefight is to find cover.
But my favourite rule is...if you are going to have a Thermal Detonator, make sure you can throw it far enough away.
Oh, and I almost forgot...you don't have to run faster than everybody else, you just have to run faster than one person. _________________ "My schooling not only failed to teach me what it professed to be teaching, but prevented me from being educated to an extent which infuriates me when I think of all I might have learned at home by myself." - George Bernard Shaw |

Added rule for Grenades...
The group had no idea how to deal with grenades before I came along... Then a Stun Grenade landed in front of Crunch.
He kicked it, punting it around the corner, where it flashed right in front of the eyes of the thrower.
A couple of months later, we were sitting around the GM's place, watching him play his new Playstation Game, "Medal of Honor"... The GM threw a grenade at a German... And went "HOLY!!!" dodging away when the German kicked it back.
"He must have studied off of Crunch." was my only statement. |

Good thing it was not an impact grenade. _________________ "My schooling not only failed to teach me what it professed to be teaching, but prevented me from being educated to an extent which infuriates me when I think of all I might have learned at home by myself." - George Bernard Shaw |

impact grenades are fun but only when your wookie grenadier is throwing them that way they get the distance they need _________________ "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times... before the Empire. "

Impact Grenades are tricky to use... If you throw *TOO* hard, they'll go off in the hand. Not to mention the tricky problem of dropping them.
Better to use a Grenade Launcher. But, you can't buy Stun Grenades for Launchers... And they're my group's primary standby (Better than Glop Grenades, our Secondary choice, as the target can't suffocate as easily!). |

"State of the art bang-bang".
With the Tech that SW has I'm doubtful that one would go off in your hand, or that they would not have an impact stun grenade for that matter.
And if they don't...homebrew it, it would hardly be implausable. _________________ "My schooling not only failed to teach me what it professed to be teaching, but prevented me from being educated to an extent which infuriates me when I think of all I might have learned at home by myself." - George Bernard Shaw |

Actually, one of the modes in the standard Stun Grenades we use is Impact.
My GM has a habit of not reading everything.
Boy was he surprised when I first used it.
As for Homebrew... All the stuff I write... Nothing is allowed by my GM. Or, rather, is ignored.
So, thusly, I'm glad that some folks are interested in it, and that I'm no longer writing it for complete self-gratification. |

Is anyone interested in Oovavoo's guide to survival...
It's only really helpful if you are an illegail alien (imerial quarenteen) with 7d in strength... 7d in strength is really helpful when it comes to survival
But here's a tip that applies to anyone

I never thought it was a good idea to have impact grenades, and here's why (this is a true story). The millitary created impact grenades for use in the 1st gulf war, during the tests a soldir used a grenade like a baseball, and another one cought it...
I am afraid of what might happen to the ri'dar on our wookiee's shoulder. _________________ 'God gave you grace to purge this place

Man, thats funny.
But really, why scrap a good idea because of a few soldiers stupidity?
Thats just natural selection at work. _________________ "My schooling not only failed to teach me what it professed to be teaching, but prevented me from being educated to an extent which infuriates me when I think of all I might have learned at home by myself." - George Bernard Shaw |
