Ok, that makes sense. If we make the Hoth shield representative of most planetary defense shields, then ground assault is a must. That also explains Thrawn's tactic of cloaked asteroid mining. He couldn't easily break through Coruscant's complete planetary shield (more money, more shielding) or engage in a long-term blockade, so he let the stealth asteroids do it for him. 300 dry fires, only 30 cloaked asteroids. The shields stay up and Coruscant put itself under siege for an entire week, maybe more. I forgot how much time it was.
The point is, the actual shield tends to be substantial and doing it's job at an area well away from the actual generator. If for any reason you are able to get past it, the shield is defenseless. _________________ My backpack has jets!
