Don't forget yellow or orange lightsaber blades. Pretty much any color can be used for lightsabers IMHO.

Which leads me to the point that it doesn't matter how the movies compare to the books. The EU is approved by Lucas isn't it? So... if it has been lawfully produced, then it exists in the SW Universe.

Yeah, well that's a whole other discussion- you know, movies vs. EU and how they conflict each other and so on.

Basically, this debate can and will go on forever if it's allowed.

Bottom line: the GM rules the game. The GM determines if lightsaber color is open to the player's wishes or not, end of story. The arguments for or against allowing it in the end don't amount to a hill of beans if the GM doesn't want anything other than the movie's demonstrated colors.

Nah, he already fell to the Dark Side if you ask me...the butchered plotline in the prequels is proof possitive of that.

However, for lightsaber colors, agreed the GM has perogative. I believe I mentioned that earlier. I personally feel any color should be allowed, but as has been mentioned, a Jedi or anyone willing to construct a lightsaber would need to find the right crystal, or combination of crystals to make the color they desire. So, if they are being picky, they may go for some time without a lightsaber.
For Jedi in my campaigns, when they are in the final days of training, they will be taught how to build a lightsaber. First they must complete a qest to get a crystal (whether or not their master has extras or has the tools to make synthetics), a natural crystal. To me, this is one of the tests of the Jedi, and illustrates the Jedi's comitment and discipline (if he takes the quick and easy path of finding someone to make a fake crystal...well...). Once the student returns to his master with the crystal, and his master deams it satisfactory, he will teach the student the rudimentary construction of a lightsaber. Often, I make these crystal quests dangerous, and with little lessons on the force and the dark side in them.

These quests are only after a student proves he is worthy to learn the construction of a lightsaber to his master.

I'll reveal his answer later. Wink

Sure. Why not? If the jedi have the good crystal, and if not the game master could create it. That could be a good start for a quest.
Idea Did someone know where I could find a list of the crystals who already existe?

I knew this list, but haven't ever seen anything that assigns colors to them. Since I've found no information on colors, I simply treat this gem family as the gems we already know. Many of them come in different colors, so I just allow each specific type to exist in different colors as well. Hey- as a GM, it's my world. Wink

The reason no color is listed is because they don't come in a single color. They are merely of differing densities for their focus of the energy, allowing for more power to be put through them and therfore create stronger blades.
But that is just my opinion.

That's what I'm saying. A diamond comes in different colors. No reason each of the gems in this list can't come in different colors as well.

Without reading the other replies, which I will do when I'm done, is to offer up another question: how are the blades made?

I know that it's been well-established that the blades are made up of crystals, a lens, an emitter, etc. The color is determined by the equipment used. Well, before EP1-3 came out, I had found a site (which I haven't been able to find now for 7 years) that discussed the idea that the blades were initially designed so their colors reflect the soul of the wielder.

Using the original trilogy:
Blue Good guys. Their souls are pure, more or less, they're more in tune with the Light Side.
Red Bad guys. Dark Side, Sith Lords, that sorta stuff.
Green The fence. Not really bad, but not necessarily good anymore either.

This was a great topic until Lucas made another trilogy where the lightsabers were so vastly different in color that the whole idea of the soul of the wielder being part of the blade... extraneous.

I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts about this BEFORE Lucas made it painfully aware that other sabers were possible.

Oh, and as far as white being a valid color, look at my comment above. If the lightsaber was a reflection of the wielder's soul, then what if someone had acheived an understanding or an enlightenment about the Force. If they were the perfect mixture of Light and Dark, then their soul would reflect that.

It wouldn't be the same as a green blade because those beings are usually still in training and are dangerously close to plummeting into evil. Only those skilled in the ways of the Force have the power to subdue their urges to such a degree that thought becomes action, and emotion in all forms becomes unnecessary. Their connection to the Force is so powerful that they are akin to Prophets in the Old Testament. They have a bond with the Force, a relationship, if you will. They hear the Force in every gust of wind, they see the Force in every living organism like Neo sees the Matrix... The Force penetrates and permeates, and one cannot be so brazen as to think there are two sides. If there is one Force, how can it be Evil or Good?

It's a philosophical ideal versus a moral code, and the Force knows your heart and what you're prepared and able to do.

I also think the color of the lightswords will be an incentive for philosophical and cultural discussions, between the Jedi and between their players.

Master Lenkar Mons once said:

As the Jedi Code teaches us:
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no death, there is the Force.

If the color of the blade is a symbol for the state of the soul, it is a symbol for the emotions of the soul. But there is no emotion, there is peace.
If the color is black or white, showing the abundance of the force like black absorbs all other colors and white bears all other colors, this leads to ignorance of the fact that you, like the lightsabers color are only part of the force and not itself. But there is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
If you choose the color by your own, you favor one color to another. But there is no passion, there is serenity.
If you take one color by random, you might think you can not wield all the other colors and that they are dead to you. But there is no death, there is the Force.

Therefore the will of the Force is clear. Accept the color of your lightsaber like the will of the force, as it is her will to change it or not to change it.

The way of the Dark Side is abuse.
The way of the Light side is acceptance.
