Sure... but if you have a gung-ho type who volunteers for the corps, rather than being conscripted, he's still going to be drilled with propaganda and serious conditioning, but he's not necessarily going to be subjected to the re-education that all conscripts went through. If you have some kid who went through the Imperial Youth program all his life, he's going to be considered indoctrinated enough- especially when he was a senior member.
But even brainwashing can sometimes be overcome when the individual is confronted with a life-changing event or set of circumstances. A stormie could invade countless homes without incident, but on the one millionth, two-hundred seventy-five thousandth, four-hundred eightieth home they bust into, a baby gets killed by whatever circumstances. This triggers a response in a particular stormtrooper, finally granting him the ability to think about how he FEELS about that. It snowballs from there.
Feasible. Definitely not usual or common, but possible. |

Yes. With the several million stormtroopers serving, it's not unfeasible for a squad or two to defect, despite brainwashing. It should be a given, looking at probabilities. Different people are affected differently, and people assigned to the same squad form a common bond, not to mention have probably been indoctrined by the same people. Secondly, it's possible that the particular indoctrinators may have been lax or not the best qualified at what they do. Human error is always possible, and given that a large segment of Imperial administrators are corrupt and lazy, it could be that Stormtroopers not receive the best of indoctrination.
Or that particular squad may go through a changing event. Who knows? |
