Nope. I just decided that since no one has it...there essentially isn't one. So, I decided to take on this effort making a new one with a couple of friends helping. Though I still need a lot of help.
This book isn't going to just be focused on Gambling and Gamblers though (of which unfortunately I know perhaps more than neccessary about). It is focused on Scoundrels as well. Since there are plenty of Smuggling material already out there, this has been left out. And smugglers don't always count as scoundrels in my opinion anyway. Here is a quote I made up for the book:
“I resent it deeply that smugglers are referred to as scoundrels. They don't deserve the title. They work too hard and too long for way too few credits. See, a smuggler is the guy who does all the work; a scoundrel is the guy the smuggler does all the work for”. --Luupon Dawque, Loan Shark
The focus of the book is about half gambling and half scoundrels. When you think about it though, these two, moreso than smugglers, go hand in hand. The scoundrels part of the book will be covering character types and situations involving loan sharks, fixers, stakers, scummy laywers, casino owners, shrewd business owners, con artists, IGC (Intergalactic Gaming Commission) agents and the like. But we am trying to keep the flow of the book so that they are all intertwined. _________________ Growing old is inevitable. Growing up is optional! |

Cool! Sounds like it'll be a great sourcebook when it's done. |

I think that the Lando Calrisian novels give some hint as to his scoundreling past, doesn't it?
Consider the various con artists that also lurk in the galaxy. If I'm not mistaken Han said (in reference to Bespin) "Lando conned somebody out of it."
I've also got a decent rendering of how to handle Sabbac in game without mucking about with long periods of time of players playing cards. I can send them allong if you'd like. |

Hey Trusty, you do have the Gambler's Handbook doc, right? That's a good starting point.
Good luck on the book, I can lay a hand if you want. Just ask. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them."

Yes. I may be one of the ten people who liked those books, but they are really cool in my opinion.

Yeah, that was an off phrase though, Lando won it in a game of Sabacc.

Okay, I've finally got my system down on paper. I'm sending it allong. I'm open to comments. Sabacc is a difficult and complex game, though D6 is supposed to be about simplicity and ease. I think this strikes a good balance between the two. I've included a description of the game from the Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook.

This is awesome! It's so painfully obvious, it hurts! Way to go man. These are some very simple and effective rules.
If you wanted to spice it up a bit, you could have the players rolling only half their gambling score, betting, then rolling the other half, then betting again. Making it more pokery. You could also add gambling/con rolls when bluffing or trying to lead an opponent to raise his bet.
The only problem with this system is that with those hidden rolls, it's awfully easy for a player to cheat..... _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Ooooo... very interesting. Very very interesting. I wonder if I should slip that in to version 1.5 or something.

See... that's the thing. Usually my players are pretty good. But the difference is in the game, if your player is caught cheating, he's likely to get a vibrorapier through the heart. In my game, if you're caught cheating a die roll, you get a real rapier through the heart. j/k
In my game it wouldn't be too much of a big deal because every player has their own set of dice and a tupperware container. I could just have them all pass their tupperware to me, so I get control of the dice and can verify everything. |

Yes, but if you're playing an NPC against the players, it's unfair that you know their "cards" before betting. It takes away from the "bluffing" aspect of it.
I guess for this system to work you just have to trust your players not to cheat..... _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

I find it very likely with all the con artists, gamblers, and whatever running around the galaxy that spice would be a pretty common thing. Back in May of 2002 someone did a good set of rules for spice addiction over at the Star Wars RPG Network.
Here's a link to the thread http://holonet.swrpgnetwork.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12376&highlight=glitterstim
I've sent a message to him asking for permission to use it in the book. It might make a nice addition. |

Yeah, I am doing a complete chapter on lifestyle including addictive habits narcotics), drinks (booze), hotels and restaurant info (what's good, what isn't, how much to tip, that sort of thing) etc...
Also, there will be a chapter on games and rules, and I am trying to look over as much as possible and designing a simple, yet expandable set of rules which will most definatly include bluffing. Sabacc isn't the only game at a casino, so there will be others. As part of the gambling chapter, there will be about half devoted to casino gaming, and the other half is going ot cover both legal and illegal sports gambling. I feel sports gambling gets shut out when it comes to Star Wars gambling when apparantly it is a big part of gambling in the Star Wars universe (Episode 1 pod racing, etc...). So there will be a nice bit of sports gambling and some effective rules for that as well. _________________ Growing old is inevitable. Growing up is optional! |
