I noticed that Dathomir is located right on the border of the area traditionally claimed by the Sith, and it would be cool to include it in an Old Republic campaign. But from what I found so far, the Jedi who founded the Witches arrived there only a few hundred years before the Galactic Empire.
Would there have been anything of notice around 4000 BBY? _________________ "Adventure? Eh... Excitement? Eh... A Jedi does not crave these things."

Rancors are sapient, and their primitive culture would be thriving there.
You might want to read up on the Blue Desert People. I do not recognize the Kwa in my campaign but you do not have that limitation. The Kwa were there in 4,000 BBY. _________________ Star Wars Deckplans Alliance

There are a few options you can play with:
• The kwa are home but their hypergates could still exist. They sealed them but nothing is ever truly gone. (Especially With Emperors. You gotta kill anyone with that title at least three times it seems.) Maybe there are still undegenerated kwa left somewhere there too.
• The Rakatan Empire might have left artifacts or knowledge.
• Sentient rancor as already mentioned.
• This is one of the worlds the Je'daii were pulled from. There's potentially something the temple on Tython would trace back to once re-established. |

wookiepedia has a lot of old republic information, battles, how it was settled first by the Kwa, how this could be a key to a party looking for rakatan/ancient technology.
We know that by 3000BBY the planet was inhabited, humans with their own language, shamanic force traditions, and even a large scale battle between the then sith empire and the republic.
there is a lot there, but very little of the "known" Clone Wars things and that, but some interesting IMO infor on the legends site of the Dathomir wookipedia
in the late stages of the old republic the planet served as a prison for some of the worst of the worst.
this is at least before 60BBY and where the "closne wars" era of the planet history starts with Sidious going there in 54 BBY where he found among others Maul |
