https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/magneticpressplay/the-official-planet-of-the-apes-role-playing-game

This just dropped today and it was backed in 15 minutes! Officially licensed D6 RPG based on the original Planets of the Apes franchise (five movies, TV series, old comics, novels, etc.). From the makers of Carbon Grey.

I am getting both hardback books (core book and sourcebook, includes digital copies), and an adventure box with all sorts of goodies. You have one month to back it.

Here is a pay-what-you-want 25-page primer pdf (including free): https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/484285/The-Official-PLANET-OF-THE-APES-RPG-Primer

I'm curious what's changed here versus the Carbon Grey RPG. It looks like the list is:
    - Psychometrics rules (I don't really know what to expect from this)
    - More rules on PSI powers (so moving back from a HyperspaceD6-style approach to a WEG 1e-style approach?)
    - Enumerated environmental challenges
    - Child and elder stat adjustments (I think I can guess how these will play out)
Everything else appears to be basically the same.

What really worries me is the focus on aesthetics over meaningful text throughout both the Kickstarter itself and the previous doc. Carbon Grey left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth because I want a concise rulebook, not an artbook--Carbon Grey's original source is a comic series! This Kickstarter feels similarly tailored toward RPG collectors more than RPG players.

I'll probably still pick up the digital file. I did steal several ideas from Carbon Grey's D6MV that simplified my game experience. I just had to work to pull those things out.

I'm mostly getting it for the art and fluff. I have long planned on adapting Planet of the Apes apes for Star Wars.

It certainly looks useful for that. D6MV seems to have a 1e feel with for codes more in line with 2e sourcebooks so the stats and mechanics are easy to port directly into either system.

I looked here before the Kickstarter launched (I got an ad about it on Facebook, though Magnetic Press never alerted me like they said they would), and didn't see anything about it. Figured I would wait until it launched.

I backed it right away, and also did the hardback books and some other stuff.

I was a fan of Apes before even SW, so I'm really looking forward to this!

There have been many stretch goals met, most of which are freebies included with any physical package.

They have added a second, longer pay-what-you-want pdf with quickstart rules:

9 days left to back it!

THanks for sharing the links Whill.

Went ahead and bought the bigger book as considering I am in my own overhaul, curious as to what they have done...

Most of it is setting material (not a lot of mechanics - but a lot of art); but a few things - surprised they kept the stats (well, they added one) - I would have expected going with either d6 adventure stats or d6 fantasy (where willpower is part of Presence).

The one thing I noticed was what looks like the separation of Character points into XP for leveling, and hero points for giving bonuses (the mechanic I use as do many others). Curious about the fatigue system (I have a stress and fatigue - with different events triggering checks) so curious to see more on that as well.

A few other things in there terms wise (free actions are quick actions it seems) and curious to see more on their fear and trauma (I use fear, and had been considering something about trauma - inspired by Blades in the Dark and Scum and Villainy).

Overall - looks good - but feels odd - not sure if players are supposed to be apes or humans? As those could be very different games (which might be good....).

While I am a not a big enough fan of the setting to actually want to play it (very curious on their market research there) I will certainly keep buying stuff - as good to support more D6 content and curious to see where they go.

thanks again for sharing links.

I had a similar question about how many people would really be interested in the theme. Given the funding level and that the quickstart rules hit bronze in about a week, I think there are more PotA fans than I realized.

It appears that the game was designed to allow for many possible types of games in this setting. There are 24 Character Archetypes spread over "7 divergent evolutionary paths":
    Chimpanzees
    Gorillas
    Orangutans
    Mutants (two types)
    Humans (tribal humans and astronauts)
So you can play humans and non-human apes.

The $15,000 goal was funded in 15 minutes – That's literally $1,000 a minute. ATM there is $261,035 total pledged by 1,555 backers.

I was a fan of the original movie series when I was little kid, but they seem silly today. I remember that on Saturday afternoons, at least one TV channel always showed movies, including all five PotA movies. We'd often go outside and play after after the morning cartoons, but the afternoon movies are often what we had to do in the winter months and on rainy days. I saw most of the James Bond movies that way (certainly edited for TV). I also saw all the Universal movie monster movies, and a bunch of ninja movies too.

I've seen the PotA reboot series (except for the current film). The three I saw were all ok but nothing spectacular. I suppose there is a bit of nostalgia affecting my appreciation. My favorite PoTA film is the standalone Tim Burton film in 2001. It's a great movie (the only Tim Burton film I have seen and feel it is worth owning).

I'm not getting the RPG to play it. I'm getting it for inspiration for my SW game (but there is perhaps some nostalgia for the old PotA franchise fueling my interest as well).

68 hours on the Kickstarter to go!

PotA was the first big genre franchise with massive marketing, before even SW. I was a huge fan as a kid, and so nostalgia drives a lot of this for me. Back in the day I had coloring books, dolls/action figures, and lots of other fun stuff.

I own all of the movies (including the recent ones) and even the TV series, though I've still not watched all of it. The prosthetics are still impressive all these years later, even if some of the conceits of the premise break down if you think about them too hard. I'm part of some PotA FB groups and there are constant questions like "why was Charlton Heston so shocked to find out he was on Earth when everybody spoke English?"

I'm not sure if I'll ever get a chance to run the game; more than likely it will just be a convention one-shot. Still, I've wanted to for some time, and I'mn sure this will be way better than previous iterations of RPGs that I've bought (Apes Victorius and Terra Primate). The main guy working on it (Andrew Gaska) did a brilliant job with the Alien RPG.

The Kickstarter ended with with 1,971 backers pledging $324,681 (toward a $15,000 goal). Wow! Safe to safe there are some PotA fans out there.

That, and why are there humans, other apes, horses, etc. if it wasn't Earth? And why is an astronaut (in such a high tech ship on such an important mission) a scientific nitwit who isn't sure time dilation is a thing? I haven't seen it in years so there are probably many other things. I always try to not think about that stuff every time I've watched it.
