Well, looking at official precedents (so not even counting fan homebrews), three out of five commercial Mon Cal freighters have backup shields. Unlike all the freighters, this tanker protects volatile chemicals, so I would think back-up shields would be a must here. The great thing about the mechanic is, that it doesn't boost the shield dice above the die code you picked. The 1D+2 is fine. But if 1D in shield gets blown, then the first back-up 1D can be brought up to replace it. And then each backup die is another separate backup that comes up if needed. I would give the tanker at least 1D in backup shields.

  	  | CRMcNeill wrote: | | My view of Mon Cal ships as a whole is that they tend to go with distributed systems over one large one, so that a single x2 hyperdrive is actually composed of multiple, smaller hyperdrives spread around the ship, all coordinated to work together. That level of dispersion and redundancy makes it a lot harder to critically damage the ship because it reduces the likelihood of a single hit rendering an entire ship system inoperable, as power can simply be rerouted to various backup systems to take up the slack.
In the case of the detachable control pod, it would have its own shields and hyperdrives, all integrated into the larger network of the ship itself, but also set up to operate independently if the pod has to eject.
 ...
It's kind of a mixed bag because of how fragile and volatile the main body of the ship is due to what it normally carries. One hit at the wrong place and the entire cargo of fuel could cook off. So, yes, the cockpit is more physically fragile, but because it's not packed with volatile chemicals, it's less likely to explode if you breathe on it wrong. I suppose there could be room for a special rule that reduces the combined ship's Hull by 1D if it's carrying something hazardous, but at the time, it seemed easy enough to say that the two balanced out.
 |
I think I see where you're coming from. The control pod isn't really an escape vehicle. This is just one big ship composed of two fully integrated vehicles, but the crew and controls for both are all in one vehicle so that is the only part that can also function as a separate vehicle on its own.

 That's fair.

Exactly. The control pod maintains similar performance because it has all of its own systems that are normally integrated into the larger network of the combined ship, but can operate completely independent of the larger ship as needed. If you look closely at the model, there are what appear to be drive tubes on the rear of the cockpit itself, which is what got me initially thinking this direction in the first place.

I'll go ahead an insert your other recommended changes now, as well.

				| EC Henry strikes again with another mystery ship from the end of Empire Strikes Back. He's calling it the FD79-Class Corvette, or Quarren Corvette. It could very easily be a Clone Wars-era Separatist ship, as EC specifically mentions similarities to the Providence-Class, which was built by the Free Dac Volunteers Engineering Corps (which was composed primarily of Quarren). _________________

Just popped over from YouTube to share this, too. Here's a link to EC Henry's collaborator, Angelos Karderinis and specifically a link to the Quarren Corvette, its interior, and the Quarren Gunship.

When Mon Cala fought off the Empire it is stated they turned their luxury liners into warships and built several scout and corvette sized ships in the Mon Calamari Shipyards. I could for sure see this as being one of those ships built in limited numbers.

				| Nah. I’ve already got a MonCal corvette / light frigate in this thread, and the Separatists are awfully thin on the escort ship roster. Since the Free Dac Volunteers were essentially all Quarren, it’s an easy step to take. _________________

Was googling around to see if anyone had already come up with credible stats for Mel Miniatures' MC-19, as I'm planning on putting a Mon Cal pilot into one for my Obscure Character thread. I should've known that the Pit's own CRMcNeill would've already done a write-up!

Definitely agreed that MM's MC-19 extrapolation from the fuzzy ESB source is the better interpretation over EC Henry's, this time. Guy can't hit a homerun every at-bat, after all.

Excellent — and thorough — work throughout this thread, as always.

And nice! Thank you for this as well, RD. The "Quarren Corvette" was particularly intriguing *and* had a logical backstory, given the lore. Having interior renders will be really useful.

I have to say that I really do like EC Henry's ship for what it is, but I just don't see how it fits with what was very clearly flying sideways in ESB.

				| This one's been sitting on my hard drive half-completed for some time now, so here we go...
There's a ship in the RotJ novel fleet list that doesn't really seem to fit: the Bestinian Skyhopper. Official canon has made the skyhopper a one/two seat atmospheric flyer, not really something suitable to deep space operation with a fleet. I've scratched my head on this for a while, but I think I have a solution I like...

 Skyhopper-Class Courier Ship

 Image

While important data is conveyed via the Holonet, the majority of information is transported by high speed licensed courier ships. Known informally as post ships (due to their common usage by the Imperial Post Office), these fast craft are a relatively common sight on major space lanes. Due to their speed, ownership of such ships is restricted to bonded and licensed couriers (who usually sub-contract with official agencies), and are mandated by law to be unarmed.

In addition, the Empire closely monitors the activities of licensed courier ships. Since it would be counterproductive to the courier's mission to stop and board every courier for inspection, couriers are equipped with a multi-frequency transponder code system that provides additional layers of information to official vessels, and is thus much more difficulty to falsify.

One such craft is Bestin Stellar Works' Skyhopper-Class. It is equipped with one of the fastest civilian drives in existence, as well as a courier-grade hyperdrive second only to the fastest of illegal smuggling vessels. In addition, the ship's state-of-the-art nav computer is one of the best and most up-to-date currently available.

Special: The ship's Transponder Code system reduces the Difficulty of other ships to Identify by -5, and is +10 Difficulty to modify.
Variants: (As Above, except as noted)
 Kesselian Blockade Runner
As one might imagine, such ships are highly attractive to the Alliance and Fringe. While the difficult-to-modify transponder code does present a problem, the ship is still usable in certain applications where the anonymity of a false identity is less important than the ship's speed and advanced navcomputer. In particular, blockade running. Most widely used by spice runners operating out of the Kessel system, the tactic has also been used by the Alliance.

Since blockade running ships operate entirely outside the law, their owners also have no compunctions about modifying their ships with weaponry, expanded sensors, jamming modules and other equipment. Often, jamming modules are specifically tuned to jam the ship's own transponder code frequency so that it can't be read by nearby ships. The weapons of such modified ships are almost always defensive in nature, used to hold off pursuing fighters and other craft. A common example of a courier ship modified as a blockade runner is presented below.

 FD-79 "Longfin"-Class Corvette

Introduced in the closing stages of the Clone Wars, the FD79 "Longfin" Corvette was introduced by the Separatists as a multi-role skirmishing platform. Intended for anything from fleet escort to commerce raiding or special operations transport, the Longfin is equipped with a well-balanced weapons suite, backed by strong shields and a sturdy hull, while still being relatively fast and maneuverable. It also has internal storage and docking bay space set aside to support a small boarding shuttle or special ops boat, along with decent endurance, allowing for somewhat extended operations independent of resupply.

Introduced during the stalemate sieges that characterized much of the final stages of the Clone Wars, the Quarren of the Free Dac Volunteers Engineering Corps continued to produce the Longfin in limited numbers after the collapse of the Separatists, with many of their remaining craft ultimately gravitating into Alliance service, filling much the same role as they had originally been intended.

				| So, circling back around to the Rebel Tanker, I was struck by the cockpit similarity between the Mel's Miniatures version and the G-9 Rigger. I'm kinda waffling between the two different depictions, as there are aspects of both that I like. My ideal would have the cockpit from Mel's, with the engine section from EC Henry's, and swapping out the comm-scan dish on EC's for a tractor beam projector. _________________

				| Actually, it's possible for both ships to exist, with the EC Henry version being the SoroSuub ship, and the Mel's version being a CEC ship designed for the same purpose and the same cargo pods. At the moment, I'm picturing the CEC having greater range, but the SoroSuub version being equipped with a tractor beam projector for greater utility. _________________

				| Bantha-Class Cargo Freighter
 Image

The Bantha-Class is a dedicated cargo transport manufactured by the SoroSuub Corporation. While most light freighters are configured with internal cargo bays (and are thus able to easily convert to passenger transports), the Bantha is a dedicated cargo transport, hauling its load in external containers mounted on port and starboard hard points. Much of the remainder of the ship's interior is devoted to the engines and the tensor field generators that stabilize the cargo pods in flight, and thus the Bantha has minimal internal crew quarters. It is also unarmed apart from a dorsal tractor beam projector that is normally used for handling and docking with free-floating cargo containers. Banthas are also short on Consumables, and are thus limited to mostly short range journeys.
