It was every time I was reading something on Wookieepedia and thought "Wait, that sounds inctedibly stupid" and looked at the source, there was Dark Empire.
I'm just glad no other writers ever seemed to reference it until The Rise of Skywalker. _________________ "Adventure? Eh... Excitement? Eh... A Jedi does not crave these things."

Dark Empire has a couple neat ideas, but you really aren't missing much. It's poorly written and rather silly, with horrible artwork. But after seeing TRoS, I have to say I do have a slightly better appreciation of DE. |
Plus, the planet killing Super-Star Destroyers in DE were a lot more visually interesting than what Disney gave us. _________________ "There's a set way to gain new Force Points and it represents a very nice system, where you're rewarded for heroism, not for being a poor conductor to electricity." ~Jachra |

We can dislike the holiday specisl for so many reasons, but if we are talking star wars I am one that will argue that not does it stand up to but it actually outshines the sequals in almost every way that has to do with star wars and the ways that does not |

In the spirit of Star Wars, let's all have a group hug and sing the Life Day song. _________________ "There's a set way to gain new Force Points and it represents a very nice system, where you're rewarded for heroism, not for being a poor conductor to electricity." ~Jachra |

I very much disagree. The sequel trilogy has many flaws, but it is worlds of magnitude better in quality compared to the extremely cringey Holiday Special. I saw it back when it originally aired (I was 13) and even then it was so bad I hoped to never see it again (but I did watch most of it again when it showed up on YouTube).
I mean, come on. Chewie's father's name is Itchy. His son is Lumpy. The VR portion is darn near pornographic. According to Wikipedia, Carrie Fisher "made Lucas give her a copy of the special in exchange for recording commentary for the Star Wars trilogy so that she would "have something for parties...when [she] wanted everyone to leave." and Anthony Daniels referred to the special as a "turd."
I mean, I get it. You don't like the sequel trilogy. But my son (as a teenager) made a Star Wars short film that far surpasses the mess that is the Holiday Special in quality. _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |

All of the above still makes the holliday special more "star wars" than the prequals, this for one simple reason and has nothing to with cinematogaphy or qulaity of work, but the Holliday Specisl as terrible as it is, was never made "specifically to subvert the fandom" we know form statements made by dorectors prodicers and others that the sequals were never made to be star wars, to further the franchise or the story, but to subvert the fandom.
But enough of that, politics and such does not beling here, but that said, when politics is the reason for something the reason needs to be mentioned.
and while I agree with the holiday specisl not being good in any way, it is star wars, and was never specifically made to subvert the fanbase, we have statement that the sequaleal were indeed made to suvert the fans and to everything "diffently" than the franchise would "allow" aka making it NON star wars |

I didn't realize until reading the Wikipedia entry that the Holiday Special was made without any input from Lucasfilm. George Lucas apparently said that it was done by some variety TV people that kind of did their own thing. He said in retrospect that they shouldn't have just given them permission to do whatever they wanted to (and I imagine it influenced how they treated the IP going forward). _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |

Correct. Politics do not belong here. You have successfully remembered the forum guideline on avoiding politics.
Mamatried wrote: | ...but that said, |
I have a bad feeling about this. It seems like you are about to knowingly, willfully violate the rule you just referenced...
Mamatried wrote: | ...when politics is the reason for something the reason needs to be mentioned. |
No, politics is not the reason for anything discussed in this thread. Period. And even if it was, no, it does not need mentioned. The above quote is the very definition of a reference to Star Wars having a political agenda. What part of "Do not state or refer to any aspect of Star Wars having a political agenda" do you not understand? It doesn't matter if you even come out and state what that political agenda is or not. We do not even start to go there here. There are other places on the internet where you can peddle that trash.
I'm sure if I go back and look, I will see that you have been warned about this before. This may be your last warning. Do not do it again. Thank you.

I agree with Doug, but when I first read his reply to you I was still going to defend you because I was sure you were just being hyperbolic. Like, "the DT is so bad it is worse than the Holiday Special!" Like we get in the 'Rank Star Wars films' threads when people want to go out of their way to be "bashy" about the movies they love to hate on. But no, you weren't being hyperbolic. Well, you are entitled to your opinion of liking whatever you want more or less than whatever you want, including liking the Holiday Special more than films.
I'm not sure if you meant to say prequels in your first sentence, because everywhere else you say sequels. And I'm not sure what you mean by "subvert the fandom/fanbase". TFA was a particularly bold statement against the PT and Lucas, but it was pro-nostalgia for the CT. TLJ on the other hand was anti-TFA, anti-nostalgia, and well, anti-everything. TLJ is the one I commonly hear fans complaining about "subverting fan expectations" so I'm thinking that maybe your point is related to all this.
I can certainly say that as a huge fan of the first film, the Holiday Special slaughtered my expectations when I first saw it as a child. Star Wars wasn't and shouldn't be a variety show. The proper SW sequels (TESB and RotJ) were a return to form. The very successful PT is objectively better planned-out and executed trilogy than even the CT, despite anyone's opinion about any story or actor choices. The DT is a jumbled mess and each film has its own issues, but in my mind there is still just no serious comparison to the HS. _________________ *

I think going foreward that the Star Wars Holiday Special, and the two Ewok Movies, should be referred to as the Television Trilogy (TT). They have their own ethos and places in canon.
Perhaps effort should be made to stat Itchy and Lumpy so they can make cameos in games? Was the video services that the wookies watched a function of the Holonet or a separate service all together, and did the ISB monitor or subvert the signal in any way? _________________ "There's a set way to gain new Force Points and it represents a very nice system, where you're rewarded for heroism, not for being a poor conductor to electricity." ~Jachra |
