One thing that comes to mind as a concrete option? Divorce CPs the advancement mechanic from CPs the metagame mechanic. It creates a severe disincentive to spend your CPs in game, because you won't be able to use them to improve your character.
Stealing from Savage Worlds, I'd do something like a "benny" mechanic... you get X at the start of each new game, and can earn more by playing to your character (especially when it is disadvantageous).
So, if you start with 3 bennies, you might, for your Ewok, just have NO CLUE about technological things. It's not just that you have a low mechanical and no skill, you actively refuse to have your character do them, because you are Primitive. If your character is personally "Offended by Rodian Stereotypes", actively showing yourself to be opposite is worth a benny... even if it WOULD be a lot easier to shoot the guy.
In Savage Worlds, the idea is that bennies will be fairly free-flowing... I spend them, but I play my character to make them, too. I might go with the Savage Worlds use of Bennies, as well... they allow you to reroll, rather than add a small bonus. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

Been there, done that, already. 1e had skill points, and in 1e core they could only be used on improving skills. 2e changed them to character points and you can use them to improve skills OR burn them in play for the bonus dice. I simply have both points. SPs are awarded for base adventure experience from and can only be used for skills. CPs are the awarded for good roleplaying and the like. They can be given at the end of the adventure with along with the SPs, but they can also be awarded live in play for something really cool, like a cool idea or something really entertaining the PC does. Players can still use them as additional SPs if they want, but using them in-play won't affect the SPs they will be awarded for skills. _________________ *

Sounds like this is a common change. I too have separated XP from CP.
I am working on a major upgrade to my d6 game, and while I am far from done (actually almost done - force powers and advanced skill options are left) I have made a lot of progress.
Side note: this is why all my annoying detailed questions on the house rules or raw interpretations recently - I want to understand what others have changed as why re-invent the dice if it works well.
Just a note - the very fact we have such an active house rules forum here on this board, is testament to all of the changes or new content experienced players have wanted to add to the system.
I love my d6 - as do many others here - but it feels like most players have some collection (or more.....) of house rules added to our old favorite game system.
Once I am done with my upgrade - I will post it - as I want a lot of feed back.
The core - is still d6 star wars - but I am changing a lot.
Unfortunately due to the magnitude of changes, I am mostly re-writing the manual (my kingdom for an editable version of the re-up to start with - unfortunately most pdf editors are terrible so just editing it is not a great option).
At this point I am incorporating;
Opend6 content (successors to swd6)
some d6 space.
Some concepts around background options from mythic d6
Dark side mechanics (morality system) from FFGs Force and Destiny
Some of the edges from Savage worlds as advanced skills for d6
A few minor things from sw d20.
When I get more content done, I will post up for feedback .... _________________ SW Fan, Gamer, Comic, Corporate nerd.
Working on massive House Rules document - pretty much a new book. Will post soon.... |
