TaleSpin was legit my favorite Disney cartoon (and cartoon at all from that era growing up.)
In fact, I was kinda thinking that Hondo sounds an awful lot like Don Karnage - which, considering he was also voiced by Jim Cummings, isn't a surprise.
Quote: | Aren't the Vulture droid fighters the ones that have a walker form? The cockpit is actually the droids head? |
For a slightly more serious pitch, I've been considering a villain for a game that's a late-model Vulture droid (one that has a fusion reactor instead of a short-term power brick) that went rogue and became a pirate leader, using holograms and a remote android body to pretend to be human. _________________ "Jumping through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy." |

You know, if a full-blown sourcebook-size adaptation is too large a project (and it is for many given the time demands), if any of you all are interested, the Wild Space SWd6 fan magazine is looking for submissions. An adventure in the SW-version of the Cape Suzette might be more of a doable and interesting undertaking.... |

Resurrection! Meant to post this write-up ages ago, but wasn't sure as to whether or not to post it here, in my "Obscure Character Archive" or in the "Non Star Wars Heroes, Star Wars Style!" thread https://rancorpit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7595 over in the Characters, Droids, and Species section.
As this was a TailSpin-dedicated thread, this one made more sense and won out. So without further ago, here is Baloo!
PS: Am obviously saying this quite belatedly, but excellent ideas/work in this thread thus far, everyone!

BALOO
Type: Hotshot Pilot

Baloo: "Great pilot, great [ship]."
Kit: "Awesome! So what's next? A double-reverse Himmelman? A pretzel twist?"
Baloo: "No. A quick exit."
- Shere Khan: (about Baloo) "THAT was a pilot to be reckoned with."

Full name: Baloo von Bruinwald XIII
Species: Balinaka
Gender: Male
Homeworld: Cape Suzette
Age: 35
Force Points: 2
Character Points: 21
Move: 12
Species Special Abilities:- Claws: Do STR+1D damage.
- Dark Vision: Balinaka have excellent vision and can see in darkness with no penalties.
- Water Breathing: Balinaka have a dual lung / gill system, and can breath both air and water with no difficulty and with no penalties.
Story Factors:- Born to Nobility... But in the End Still Broke: It was revealed that Baloo comes from a prominent noble family, (being Baloo, Baron von Bruinwald XIII) though he himself had been initially unaware; raising the possibility that he was adopted. He inherited 500 million dollars in the form of an extravagant estate, which was taken from him to settle the matter of his family's impressively long history of owing back taxes, thus restoring the status quo.
- Good Heart: Despite his laziness, Baloo has a sound moral compass and will always try to do the right thing.
- Poor Speller: Baloo has been a poor speller since third grade, when his teacher said he'd (eventually) be sorry for it. In game terms, if a Knowledge-based skill check involves spelling, the difficulty for Baloo increases by one level.
- Slothful: If an opportunity for R&R presents itself, Baloo will likely take it. In game terms, when in non-threatening circumstances, Baloo must make a Moderate willpower roll to resist taking the chance to kick back and relax. If in more dire and/or dangerous circumstances, the willpower check's difficulty is reduced to Very Easy.
Capsule: Baloo lived on the planet Cape Suzette, where he ran his own freight shipping company, Baloo's Space Service. His business didn't make much of a profit however, and when it did, Baloo was often too forgetful to pay his bills in a timely manner... if at all. As a result, the bank foreclosed on Baloo's mortgage and repossessed his business. The latter was eventually purchased by an entrepreneur named Rebecca Cunningham, changing the name to a the catchier, Higher for Hire. She had difficulty finding a pilot, until she hired the then-still-unemployed Baloo to serve as Higher for Hire's primary (ie: only) pilot, once again flying his own highty-modified AIAT/i, the Sea Duck.
In time, Higher for Hire became a genuinely viable business with a reputation for heroic deeds, thanks to the efforts of the team Cunningham had assembled, and despite (or perhaps in part because of) a growing romantic tension between Baloo and Cunningham. In addition to Baloo's ace piloting, Kit Cloudkicker, a Balinaka cub named who had once been an air pirate under Don Karnage, soon became Baloo's trusted co-pilot, best friend, and eventual foster son. The duo's nicknames for one another even served as their call-signs: Baloo was "Papa Bear" and Kit was (at first begrudgingly) "Li'l Britches." While the strange but ingenious, starship mechanic Wildcat took care of all the equipment maintenance. Often, their efforts were all that stood between the litany of villainous forces trying to take over the Cape Suzette system: cunning tycoon Shere Khan, the fearsome, flamboyant pirate Don Karnage, and the often-crazed, clearly-overcompensating Imperial officer, Colonel Spigot.
Between adventures, Baloo tried to enjoy the good life and was often found hanging out at Cape Suzette's tropical cabana cantina and night club, run by his old friend Louie.
Although lazy, slovenly, and almost always broke, Baloo was an excellent pilot, capable of making even the most daring and dangerous maneuvers, in the air and in space. Moreover, he always had the courage to even attempt such feats in the first place. Perhaps most important of all however, Baloo was selfless, and was always willing to aid those in need.
Equipment: Cap, comlink, financial debt, heavy blaster pistol (5D damage, 3-7/25/50, ammo: 50), highly-modified AIAT/i starship (Sea Duck), holster and utility belt, leather "bomber" jacket (+1 vs. edged physical damage, covers torso only), scarf.
Above: Baloo, when he was but a young spacer.

You keep coming up with names like that, and you'll ruffle enough feathers that someone will cry "FOWL!" |

Thanks very much, guys! Loved the TailSpin show as a kid (and most of the "Disney Afternoon" of course), and the repurposing of Baloo and the Jungle Book cast.
And haha, would have to think on how the other characters would translate. Is Colonel Spigot a tiny Gamorrean with a Napolean complex? Is Shere Kahn a Togorian or one of the other feline species?

Ouch and ouch again. These are definitely puns worth of Fozzie.

Haha, I've never played Space Quest, but 1. Love that color scheme, and 2. The pun name fits. It's sounds like something right out of Duck Tales or Darkwing Duck really.
I also thought about changing the Sea Duck's name to something more SW/spacey, but kept all the proper names as they were. I did tweak one of his quotes from the show to refer to a "ship" rather than a plane though! _________________ *************************************

Oh, that's a perfect choice.
The Kasa Horansi's appearance is a great match, and the species' low-level-tech and "primitive" background provide a nice contrast to how well Shere Khan has mastered business (and presumably off-world high-culture interaction).
And with how he carries himself in such a worldly/sophisticated way, being a Kasa Horansi makes his character all the more arrogant/proud! _________________ *************************************
