Pardon me if this is something exists or is a bit incomprehensible... these were a major feature in a dream last night, and I'm trying to express them in D6.
Datamite
Datamites an infestation that is endemic to many places of discarded technology. Created centuries ago, they are an aborted attempt at nanotechnology that evolved into their current form. Originally, they were supposed to cause a "grey goo" scenario... attacking durasteel and using it to create more nanites. However, the nanites quickly learned that they needed far more of the materials used in data structures than they did durasteel, and prioritized their efforts towards those materials.
As such, Datamites particularly attract droids, communicators, sensors, and ships computers, while leaving the structure largely untouched. When Datamites are present, the GM should roll Hull (or Strength, for droids) every 12 hours to see if an infestation is passed along.
An infestation of Datamites will manifest first as a -1 to a single system (sensors, fire control, or astrogation in ships, or a Knowledge or Technical skill for a droid). Any time a 1 is rolled on any die involving that system, however, Datamites will spread to another system, or further infest the current system. The further the infestation spreads, the faster it will spread, as more systems are effected and crosscheck with other systems.
Because datamite infestations begin so small, they can remain undetected until they reach more severe penalties. Datamite infestations, once detected, take three hours to clear per -1, per system, in a ship, or 30 minutes per -1 in a droid. The penalty inflicted by the datamites is also inflicted upon the Repair roll. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

How easy is it to 'purge them'? IMO wouldn't an EMP or ion weapon work well? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

The way I pictured them is something that's relatively easy to deal with, using standard tools, once you know you have them. You have to take time to clear everything, and it will mean going over the entire ship to make sure you've got them all, but not requiring much in the way of special equipment or time.
Rewritten below, in response to feedback.

Any time a 1 is rolled on any die involving that system, however, Datamites will spread to another system, or further infest the current system. The further the infestation spreads, the faster it will spread, as more systems are effected and crosscheck with other systems. Cybernetic systems manifest the penalty in whatever their systems cover (a cybernetic arm might show in Dexterity or Strength skills, for example, while eyes would cause Perception issues). Less complex systems, like datapads, tend to show minor random glitches while infested, before sudden, catastrophic, failure.
Because datamite infestations begin so small, they can remain undetected until they reach more severe penalties. Datamite infestations, once detected, are relatively easy to clear, but take time. It requires three hours to clear per -1, per system, in a ship, or 30 minutes per -1 in a droid or smaller system. The penalty inflicted by the datamites is also inflicted upon the Repair roll, which begins at easy. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"
