|
|
I don't where to put this, but I was thinking about what it takes to support a starship.
Now I consider starships in Star Wars verymuch like our earth's navy ships and ocaen lines etc.
I was wondering what size ship/fleet a planetary population of less than 100 000 couls support.
Now I would not think they could support an ISD given the sheer number of crew would be close to 40% of entire population. Someting like a Gladiator with a crew of 1200 is even in the high range I would think, but I find this to be an interesting thing.
THis can too be relevant to larger scaled campaigns, and making plaets, as a 100 000 population colony would most most likely not be able to support much at all.
I am in this considering population size only, and take for granted that any rescourses beyond manpower is met.
Have anyone any thoughts of this? |

Well, looking just at the USN for example, the entire base of NOB Norfolk, has roughly 20k in support staff on base (civilians), from cooks, to grounds cleaners, to the shipyard workers.. Taking all the ships IN norfolk, that equates to roughly 100k naval folks. So that gives a 20% of the crew in support staff.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

It is sort of what I figured myself.
Lets say for the sake of argument that we are talking ablut an ISD type ship that can land, the ship don't need exsist as this is about support size.
So lets say a regulr ISD can land for this discussion, and as such I compare this to the Nimitz class carriers on earth, and then how would only about 1500 be enough to support the ship.
I am thinking a population around 100 000 would have a workforce pool of about 1/2 considering age range from children to elderly, I would also think that even of this seems enough and we do have food and enough for the population, it seems to me a bit low.
but 20% is a fair assesment.
Another question would be if we need 20% of crew size to support, how much population would this be with age considered? |

I'd also note that it somewhat depends on the planet.
Tattooine? Probably can't support much.
A planet with 100k people, but millions of droids to do the labor, could probably support a sizable fleet... even close to 100% mobilization, if the droids were made well enough. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

i think what garhkal was saying as that its about 20% of the ship's total crew itself.
so for that ISD with a crew of 36,810 and its 9,700 troops for a total of 46,510 persons, the required support of 20% of that is 9,302 people just for that one ISD. _________________ Aim low, shoot high

No i was on about support personnel on the base.. Such as supply staff, PSD staff, medical/dental (non-mil rates), etc.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Don’t forget droids. In the SWU, a huge proportion of the menial, clerical and other support duties will be handled by droids working under organic supervision (sometimes not even then; see EV-9D9). _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. And don't forget about all the people who support the support people...
That's how communities grow and grow...
Say a space ship engineer is there to support the functioning of a capital ship.
He needs to buys his groceries somewhere. Someone needs to ship or produce those groceries. If its farming someone has to process the food; ie butchers.
He might be married. Does the spouse work?
Someone has to run the banking branch.
Who treats the sick, runs a hospital/ clinic.
Who builds and maintains the houses, the power stations, the lines of communication.
Who teaches school for the kids?
Is there a news broadcasting service?
Entertainment of all sorts?
Vendors for furniture, appliances, liquor, electronics...
Spirals on and on. |

In the city of Milan there are over a hundred hauberk makers alone. Which is to say nothing of the innumerable wire makers and iron makers that support them.
Course in Star Wars almost every job you mentioned would be 99% automated. |

It would seem that way, but then suspension of disbelief starts to break down.
Look at the billions of people on Coruscant.
What do they DO for a living?
In a space opera setting, its conceivable that automation might be the norm in some planets, regions or cities...but I think there just has to be a large percentage of sentients who have to do the menial jobs.
Even slave labour is still a thing after all... |

Plus even in novels/modules, most of the work force mentioned around, is 'human' (living being).. Not much seems droid. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
