I know that there is no real answer to this. This question is an invitation to speculation, opinion, and informed thought.

What's a good living wage in the SW universe.

Yeah, I know it depends on the world you live on and what part of the galaxy you are from. But, let's discuss this in broad strokes.

The game tells us that a used spaceship costs 25,000. A new on costs 100,000. We can see all the prices of gear and such in the game.

How much per year is a good wage? Is an Imperial Credit (or Republican Credit) worth about one US dollar? Or one pound sterling?

Is 50,000 a year a decent living? 100,000?

What do you think?

Interesting questions.

I am not sure but I seem to remember from the thrawn book, the latest one, that arinda pryce was mentioning something about rent prices on coruscant, and there it was among other things depended on level with surface having the highest prices etc.

I can assume it cost less to live in relative comfort on tatooine, so if we consider 50 000, or the amount owed by Han to Jabbs, then either this is a huge amount, or han din't care, I think the first one is the case.

if you live for 500c month rent I am sure you can have a relative comfort though not much space.
1000 I think is more city apartment, with prices going +/- 25% depending on planet.

6000/year to 12000/year is reasonable living.

I would assume a regular worker's wages is about living +25-50% yearly

this will make gear and weapons expensive and I think it should be, a ship, even an old derelict freighter is quite a scoop and will set you back unless you "liberate" .

I'd say 10-12k/yr is a decent living wage, for most low/mid class folk.

Based on...? How'd you come up with that figure? What's your reasoning?

Haven't got it to hand, but the Star Wars Sourcebook lists housing rental prices per month. That might provide an insight to what people can afford per month and help to work out roughly the cost of living.

If you look to weapons and other goods, you might get some figures you could use. However, the local variations would be HUGE, so it wouldn't be more than a ballpark.

A DH-7 blaster pistol costs 550 credits. An SBP-200 blaster pistol (notoriously low-quality) is 300. A DLT-20A military blaster rifle is 1300. A HBt-4 hunting blaster is 880 credits.

So, let's consider firearm prices in the US. A 9mm Glock, generally a well-regarded handgun, starts at about 550 USD (model 26). A Kel-Tec PF-9 is a 9mm handgun from a company with perhaps not the best reputation will set you back about 250 USD. The M27 IAR, a rifle based on the HK416, has a unit cost of 1300. And a Ruger rifle, depending on caliber and finish, can set you back everything from 490 USD to 1300 USD - add the cost of optics and customization to that and I'm sure the sky's the limit.

I suggest that for an average planet - not an ecumenopolis like Coruscant, nor a backwater like Tatooine, and with 'average' law enforcement and access to weaponry - just look to US prices. The median income in the US in 2014 was ~52,000 USD.

Eyeballing it, that looks ok. However, individual planets might be hugely skewed. Look to Manaan, for instance. In Galactic Empire times, it is a densely populated aquatic planet with a severe pollution problem. One might think that clean water and food might cost more than 'Galactic Standard', and that having a place to stay would cost the majority of one's wage.

In the era of kolto, kolto-enhanced product might be cheaper on Manaan than almost anywhere else - up to when the Imperial occupation made it hard to get any kolto at all.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel that 1 Imperial credit roughly equals 1 US dollar. And, incomes are roughly equivalent to US incomes:

30,000/yr a person can live on it

50,000/yr low end of middle class income

100,000/yr where most wage earners top out

250,000/yr is high income

300,000/yr or more, is the top 10%

Successful stock brokers, surgeons, lawyers, business owners and the like can make millions each year.

That's my usual default. It makes improvising prices a bit more intuitive.

The starwars sourcebook. A regular appt goes for 250-500 credits/mo. A house from 750cr/mo. Even taking it at 900cr/mo, that 12k/yr covers the house AND gives a good 1k or so left for other bills..

Yeah, makes sense. Then an Imperial credit has a lot more buying power than the US dollar.

In the Saga Edition core book, it had costs for maintaining a certain lifestyle.

All costs per month.
Luxurious = 10,000
Wealthy = 5,000
Comfortable = 2,000
Average = 1,000
Struggling = 500
Impoverished = 200
Self-Sufficient = 100

Judging by theat, Garhkal was correct. 12,000 per year is average.

I would say 12 000 is slightly below.
Looking at the list, you see the "rent" costs, so in addition you need at least food, and some spending money.

I would say 15 000 is average

A good financial adviser would tell you that you should never spend more than 25 percent on housing. Take the housing you would be considered "good" times 4 and that would be "good money".
