A bit of a conceptual question:

Was Luke a starting character at the beginning of A New Hope?

No. His stats were way too high.

I tend to agree here. Luke was NOT a starting character.

WotC (for whatever that's worth) put him as a 2nd level character prior to meeting Obi-Wan.

In fact, I would assert that the only "starting character" we see in the films is Anakin in Ep.I

Film or novel makers, though, didn't HAVE the rules for a game (which came many years AFTER the film) to base a hero off of though.

No, they don't. But I was approaching this from "If there was ever an example of a starting character, it's pretty much the farmboy who has never really left the farm, and considers nearby towns to be a big trip." He made the trip to Tosche Station as a relatively routine thing. In dealing with Ben, he was willing to take him to Anchorhead, but not as a far as Mos Eisley. I'm reminded of my own cousins, raised on a farm, who would go to Caldwell or Medford without a thought, go to Wellington without too much effort, but Wichita? That was a trip not to be made lightly.

And then I think of other examples of starting characters... the Failed Jedi. The Wookie. Folks who may've been around for a while.

Film makers don't have the RPG, but the RPG has the film.

Exactly.

For Luke to be able to blow up THE DEATH STAR on his first trip off-world, it seems he would be more than a starting character, at least on par with, for example, Wedge.

I can overlook a lot of "Dramatically Appropriate" stuff... give Luke a high Mechanical attribute and he's going to be doing pretty well, and the RAW allows him to have improved his Starship Gunnery based on the firefight as they're escaping to hyperspace.

Related to this: When did Luke get his first die of Control? Sense? Alter?

According to the stats in Galaxy Guide 1, Luke has 3D Control, 2D Sense and 2 control powers; accelerate healing and concentration

I would argue that, like his father, Luke had force skills before the movie started. It would take 32 days to get his skills to 3D & 2D.

Is that math right? 10 days for each first die, 3 days for each second die and six days for the third die.

But that's just idle speculation.

Not to mention 30 CPs just to get the skills at all!

Luke has only completed one adventure before attacking the death star. Which would mean by RAW, he could have a max of 6D+1 in any skill.

Since hr used a FP and concentration, we can allow for it.

But ask Garhkal how reasonable it is for a "starting character" to take down something like the Death Star on his first time out of the house.

Luke's Starship gunnery is only 6D. So concentration brings him to 9D and an FP puts him at 18D.

Works for me.

Heck, even at 5d starship gunnery, that goes to 10d on a force point, +12d for the scale difference.. 22d to make a heroic + shot.

Interesting that you'd allow the scale bonus. The target is 2m wide... "impossible, even for a computer."
