Back in the day, when I started GMing, I would have lots of GM characters hanging with the PCs. I sort of regret it now, but I still use them and I introduce at least one GMC per new Character or campaign. What about you? _________________ "I don't know about angels, but it's fear that gives men wings." -Max Payne

I sometimes use one NPC to be an in-game guide for the group. This can help to keep the group on task and keep the adventure on course. I'm not a big fan of using a large number of NPCs as part of the PC group, just because it takes away from the players' characters. _________________ "Mind what you have learned. With the groups that i've played and GMed over the years, mostly NPCs are introduced into the group for a couple of reasons. One is that the PC's are looking for one. Which could mean a wife, girlfriend, a specialist. Another is for adventure back ground. Which is more geared toward campaigns, or for a few adventures ahead. |

In the old days every one was new, even me. I use NPCs as guides and friends when it was only me and a player.
Problem was, when those single players got together for big games, they brought their friends along. I think I good on NPCs now though. |

Say, how do you handle NPC techs?
None of my players are techs so mods are handled through credits and NPC techs. Any suggestions? _________________ "I don't know about angels, but it's fear that gives men wings." -Max Payne

the only reason no one really likes to be a techy is because if you focus on tech skills you can't do much else and it makes you kind of boring until someone needs you. |

yeah, exactly... at least in the independant game it seemed like able bodied combatants were more sought after then a guy who could fix anything _________________ "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. I believe we had a discussion about independents and techs once.
I think I mentioned Han Solo...

With regard to NPCs, how do you all handle Player characters becoming NPCs then back again? _________________ "I don't know about angels, but it's fear that gives men wings." -Max Payne

What we've done in the past is when a character gets really powerful (and the player kinda gets bored with playing them), they sometimes become NPCs that show up from time to time to help out the PCs.
I've also used some players' characters as NPCs when the player couldn't make it for a gaming session. You have to be very careful with this one, as you can't really have too much happen to the character if the player is going to continue playing them. You can't make too many decisions without their input. It can work well to use them as minor NPCs that just help out a little in adventures, maybe fly the ship to get the other PCs from planet to planet or something. _________________ "Mind what you have learned. In my groups I put about three NPCs for every two PCs and I start the NPCs much better than the PCs but they don't train. _________________ 'God gave you grace to purge this place
