So, as i had to get a new desktop for my gaming, its now running win 7 (the oldest OS i have found stores still have for desktops), but other than the Jedi Knight - Outcast game, all the others for the most part, don't even install cause of incompatibility issues with 64 bit OSes..
Over on Dragonsfoot (one of my adnd sites), someone mentioned the website GOG.com, where you can download a pre-packaged version of some of these older games (like Xwing vs Tie, or Classic Tie Fighter)..
Anyone here done so? Which OS do you have it working on? Which game(s) did you get?
had any issues? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

As Zarn said, they come with a prepackaged version of DOSBox, which creates an emulated OS machine inside your computer to run them. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

I bought just about their whole catalog of Star Wars games for super cheap during a couple of their sales. So far, the only one I've had a chance to play was Rebellion. After patching it (there was some wonkiness with backwards icons), it worked just like on my old Win95 computer. I can't wait to play the rest. _________________ Currently playing D&D 5E and painting an unholy amount of miniatures. |

All of the Star Wars games I've played from GOG.com have been functional on my Windows 10 rig. As mentioned they create their own miniature virtual machine to account for any compatibility issues and should work straight out of the box. Some of the games are new enough to not have many problems anyway, such as the latter-day Jedi Knight titles like Outcast and Academy. |

Hmm.. Might have to create an account and at least try out the 30 day 'money back guarantee' for the tie fighter classic, before getting my 'feet wet, with any others'... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Good idea. Check it out. I got the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. All worked as described. X-Wing Alliance is not compatible with Windows 10, but it says so right in the system requirements. So, no surprises. _________________ __________________________________
Before we take any of this too seriously, just remember that in the middle episode a little rubber puppet moves a spaceship with his mind. |

I've had no problem running the game under Windows 10 personally, so I shouldn't worry about it too much. Worst case scenario is you have to fiddle about with compatibility settings, but I haven't had to personally. |
