Hi all. I had to travel to a new town recently, and stopped off at their local games store. Managed to find some D6 books to add to my collection:
Adventure Journal Vol. 1 Number 4
Rules of Engagement
Battle for the Golden Sun
Death in the Undercity
Planet of the Mists
The Isis Coordinates
The Jedi Academy Sourcebook
Anyone familar with these books and can give me some feedback on them?
They're in pretty good condition, and there's a couple there I hadn't heard of, so it made the trip turn out even more enjoyable (my wallet is in pain though!) _________________ "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't." |

I have Rules of Engagement and The Jedi Academy Sourcebook
Rules of Engagement is everything you need for a Rebel special forces game including military jargon, tactics, equipment and vessels, creatures, stats for each of the types special force rebels 'types' (Space Ops, Pathfinders, Urban Combat Specialists, Wilderness Fighters, Infiltrators, Heavy Weapons Specialists, Techs, Drivers/Pilots, Scanner-Comm Operators, Interrogators and procurement Specialists) and particular SPecial Forces related NPC's (I believe these are all 'new'). There are also stats for copious Imperial enemies. One of the main things I find really useful in this book are the numerous optional rules sidebars such as the effects of contaminated water, climbing difficulties, suppression fire, martial arts techniques and many others that are all really useful for a GM's in general. Also included are templates for all the Rebel Spec Force 'Types'. Personally I think this is one of the best purchases I made, it certainly gets a lot of use.
The Jedi Academy Sourcebook is very similar to the others of it's type (like the Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook) in that it basically tells you the brief happenings of the books it was based on and stats all of the major stuff, including updated stats for all the major figures from Star Wars. While I haven't read the novels, the sourcebook seems fairly good and includes some nice info on Coruscant, Kessel, Lukes's Jedi Academy on Yavin Four (includes what were a few new Force Powers at the time), Mon Calamari, Bespin and a few ther planets are detailed too. It also details the Maw Facility with the prototype Death Star and the Sun Crusher (50D hull...). Includes the usual stats for ships, vehicles and creatures, there are also rules for doing the Kessel Run and for Glitterstim Spice.
I don't get a lot of use out of this particular book, our group campaign is set after this period, but it does contain a lot of information and would be a useful resource for early-ish New Republic based campaigns.
Just my thoughts though, I'm sure others will give you further feedback

Yeah, Rules of Engagement is hands-down my favorite D6 Star Wars book. I've always been fascinated by special forces, so combining that with Star Wars can only lead to sheer awesome.
One book that I still regret not picking up when I had the chance was Platt's Smuggling Guide. I'm still kicking myself over that 20 years later. _________________ Sutehp's RPG Goodies
Only some of it is for D6 Star Wars.
Just repurchased the X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim games. I forgot how much I missed them. |

Score! Especially those 1e modules. I've ran them all except Planets of the Mists. Battle for the Golden Sun, Death in the Undercity, and The Isis Coordinates are all pretty cool. AJ 4 has "It's a Gambler's Life" which has good ideas for gambler/con artist/dealmaker types of characters, and it has the first appearance of a WEG species which is now canonized in film by RO. I haven't looked at the Jedi Academy Sourcebook in a very long time because those novels were pretty bad, but IIRC there are a few interesting tidbits. Xain Arke covered that well above. I agree with what has been said about Rules of Engagement. It has lots of optional rules, and it's not just great for Rebel Spec Forces campaigns. Rebel Spec Forces characters who get moved to the more common Rebel campaign type of Spec Ops can be a lot of fun.

I have the entire catalogue and PSG is one of my favorite books. I highly recommend it for smuggler campaigns and smuggler characters. _________________ *

I'm a bit bummed that we never got more fluff about SpecOps than the short blurb we got in GG 9: Fragments from the Rim, as compared to the entire book of RoE. But even with the Interservice Rivalry between SpecForce and SpecOps, I was still tickled pink to find out after reading about Haathi and Co. in the Adventure Journals that Jayme and Morgan were formerly in SpecForce before they transferred to Haathi's SpecOps unit...which makes both of them Spectres!
And the best part? Despite the fact that Morgan and Jayme are Spectres, the Interservice Rivalry never comes up in Haathi's unit, so it doesn't detract at all from the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, well-oiled improvisation machine that is Haathi's unit. Despite having nothing in common (except for being misfits having a disdain for authority), they work amazingly well together. For f*ck's sake, Haathi's schemes to accomplish their missions run on nothing but Indy Ploy. And they work.
Seriously, read "The Art of Infiltration" in Adventure Journal 17. Haathi and Co. infiltration of an Imperial Garrison has to be seen to be believed.
(Also see "Special Ops: Ship Jackers"—Star Wars Adventure Journal 13 and "Special Ops: Drop Points"—Star Wars Adventure Journal 14 for their earlier adventures.)

Yeah, I'm reading it through cover to cover to further flesh out my lawyer-turned-smuggler character. Having Platt O'Keefe narrate it is just icing on the cake. _________________ Sutehp's RPG Goodies

Thanks all. I've read through the Adventure Journal already. Looks like Rules of Engagement will be my next stop!
I agree about the Jedi Academy series. I never liked them myself. I've thought about re-reading them, but can't bring myself to do so.
Still, there might be some stuff of interest in the Sourcebook!
I need to look for my game shops on my travels, as picking these books up was an unexpected bonus!! _________________ "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't." |

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic of if you like them. It sounds like a sarcastic comment about poor writing. Anyways a few local games stores still have large stocks of WEG D6 books. I will keep an eye out for the smugglers guide. If I find it, I'll trade it for any supplement that contains published WEG SWMB material I don't yet own. All I have is the 4 main SWMB books and the Classic Campaigns book. |

I think Haathi and Co. are awesome and, with only the exception of the write-up about Imperial garrisons in Adventure Journal 12, they're the best thing to come out of the Adventure Journals (not that there's not plenty of other awesome stuff in those magazines).
My point about Haathi and Co. not bringing up the rivalry between SpecForce and SpecOps was that they work so well together, such petty concerns are beneath their notice. And the fact that they are a bunch of misfits who improv all their missions and succeed despite this would-be seeming handicap only makes them that much more awesome. Well, except for Nord. _________________ Sutehp's RPG Goodies

Interesting, interesting.
As far as I know, there were two SWMB scenarios which were only published in Adventure Journal. If anyone knows the issues I'd like to track them down sooner than later. One involved a raid on a rebel training camp. The other was AT-AT's vs. speeders and had paper token minis for you to photocopy and cut out to play the game. |

Sorry, to make sure, SWMB stands for Star Wars Miniatures Battles, right? I remember seeing one or two of those as I was perusing the Adventure Journals, but I don't remember which ones. I'll see if I can find them. Stay tuned. _________________ Sutehp's RPG Goodies

FYI, messages stay in the Outbox until they are viewed by the recipient. Then they move to Sent. He probably just hasn't checked his PMs yet. _________________ *
